[comp.sys.amiga] Affordable system for Amiga Video?

nraoaoc@nmtsun.nmt.edu (NRAO Array Operations Center) (12/10/89)

My kids have been reading about using Amigas for video projects, and
it being Christmas, I want to find out how much it costs to get into
this. Actually I am neither that wealthy nor that generous: I seem to
be one of the last people in the civilized world who doesn't have a
VCR (at least that's what my kids tell me), and finally I am giving
in. But, if I have to give in about getting a VCR; I might as well
make sure there is some interesting use for it.

I do not even know what is interesting to do, but two things I can
think of is create animations and edit video tapes to add titles and
animations. Since I have shamelessly ignored everything about video
applications until now - except to tell people what a great machine
the Amiga is for video - I need a lot of information to be able to
figure out a system that can do interesting things. I have neither
the need nor the means to get a full-blown professional system.

1. What kind of VCR do you need to be able to write to it from an Amiga
and to edit frames? That is, is the normal 4 head VCR paused on a frame
what people use, or do you need still more control? Is a cheap brand like
Hitachi good enough, or do you have to buy a Sony?

2. One needs hardware to make the computer talk to the VCR. What systems
have people found useful? I looked at the Jan. Amigaworld and at the recent
catalog from Computer Discounts, but I am fundamentally unclear about
what is needed to do anything interesting.

3. What hardware is necessary to add sound to the tape?

4. There are a number of software packages, but, these must presuppose some
hardware. Which packages are useful for the "interesting, but unprofessional"
hardware system that I ought to shoot for.

5. Not having a VCR, I do not have a camcorder either. If one were to get a
camcorder, what are the requirements so that it can talk to the Amiga. (I
am not thinking of buying a camcorder now, but could borrow one to experiment
with.)

I would especially like to hear from anyone who has put together the sort
of system I outlined. (I know the details are vague, but that is because
I do not have any requirements except that it be interesting.)
