I have an Amiga 1000 with 512K memory. My hard drive is a Xebec 9720H (20 Meg). I'm running Workbench 1.2. Every once in a while, and it's becoming more frequent, things simply lock up and the only way to recover is to reboot. During reboot, the hard drive doesn't validate, giving me an error like, "Error validating disk Xebec, key 20888 bad block type." This phenomenon often occurs while running Textcraft Plus. What typically happens is that I'll open a header within Textcraft and upon closing it, all response from the keyboard and mouse is gone. There are no warnings or any unusual behaviors observed prior to this happening. It has also happened when exiting the program. I also experienced the problem after issuing a copy command (for a small file) inside a cli window. On some occasions I've gotten a guru message. The guru number that comes up most frequently is : 8700000B.265F48F1, althought once I got 84038002.00FC165A (I think this one occurred after exiting textcraft). On every occasion I've been able to use diskdoctor to clean up the disk, i.e. delete the currupted files. The files that are found to be currupt are not always ones that were accessed during the session. After copying needed files off the disk, I reformated and went on my merry way to restoring the files on the disk without incident. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this behavior? Thanks in advance. Mark Thistle (thistle@super.org) Supercomputing Research Center
