A rather comprehensive and readable article on the Xerox Star is in the September 1989 issue of IEEE Computer, "The Xerox Star: A Retrospective", pp. 11-29 by Jeff Johnson, Teresa L. Roberts, William Verplank, David C. Smith, Charles H. Irby, Marian Beard and Kevin Mackey. It is interesting to note that development of the Star began in 1975 and it was released as a product in 1981. The article describes the Star, the properties of its user interface and the history of its development. There is an interesting graph which illustrates how systems have influenced each other. For example Adobe's Postscript was derived from Xerox Interpress.
