[comp.sys.amiga] Ada 'n' FTP !!

MCVICKER_E%P1.LANCSP.AC.UK@cunyvm.cuny.edu (Manney) (12/18/89)

Can anyone help me ??
I am in desperate need of and ADA compiler for the amiga
Does anyone know of any that are available, and if so where
from, and how much. And also can anyone give me some FTP addresses
that I can access from my site, as I am still fairly new to all this.

                                        thanks

There is no Ada compiler currently ported to the Amiga that I know of.

I have been off the net for the past few weeks and have not compiled all of the
responses to my request of Ada interest. Off the top of my head there were
thirty-five or so responses, several with multiple interested parties.

To Recap:

R&R Software of Madison, WI has said that there is some internal interest in
porting the JANUS Ada compiler (validated) to the Amiga, BUT there would have
to be significant interest expressed in the port (ie I think they would like
us to commit to buying the Amiga-based compiler). Their current release sells
for $300.00 on the little blue box. I would commit to the purchase if the
port time was reasonable.

Another possibility might be the University of York Ada compiler. I believe
they several port in progress.

If C='s (federal systems?) marketroids had any long-range vision, they
would pay R&R's (or Meridian's, or Verdix's, or ...) development costs
_for_ them. Then again, weren't they the same people who said,
"Desktop III? What's a desktop eye-eye-eye?"

No!! _Please_ don't ask Meridian to port their miserable excuse for
an Ada compiler to the Amiga! Encourage anyone but _them_!

I've used Meridian on a PC/AT, and found it wanting. Bletch!

Golly, I'd like to buy a hard disk and memory, and an Ada compiler for
my Amy!

Ada is the way, the truth,.... and DEC Ada is very nice!

According to the December 1989 list of Ada compilers validated by the Ada
Joint Program Office (AJPO), as distributed by the Ada Information Clearinghouse
there are no validated Ada compilers for the Amiga. Fred Fish Disk #154
contains an Ada syntax checker, but I haven't looked at it yet.

The validated compilers list identifies 5 MS-DOS Ada compilers (AETECH's
IntegrAda, AlsyCOMP by Alsys, Meridian Software's AdaVantage, JANUS/Ada by
R.R Software, and TELESOFT's TeleGen2), and 3 MacIntosh Ada compilers
(Alsys for the MacII running A/UX, Meridian for the MacII and Mac SE/30
running 6.0.3, and TELESOFT for the MacIIx running A/UX).

I know that I'd be interested in buying an Ada compiler for the Amiga in
the $300 price range. I suspect it will be a long time before there are any
public domain or free Ada compilers (who would keep up with the validation
requirements). The closest I see to non-commercial Ada compilers are the
Navy compilers developed by the Naval Underwater Systems Center for VAX/VMS
and the Navy standard computers (UYK-43, UYK-44, AYK-14), New York University's
NYU Ada/Ed for the Sun-3/60 (running Sun UNIX), and the York Ada Compiler
Environment from York Software Engineering Limited/University of York (is this
an educational or commercial endeavor?).
