I've just setup the Parallel Port Network by Matt Dillon and John Toebes and Doug Walker. It seems to work just fine in most repects, but I cannot get any icons to show up in the "Network:" "disk" on the Workbench. A directory listing from the CLI shows: 2.Network:> date Sunday 17-Dec-89 22:47:56 2.Network:> ls -l -----rwed 86-03-20 00:00:00 0 Dir DH0 -----rwed 86-03-20 00:00:00 0 Dir DH1 -----rwed 86-03-20 00:00:00 0 Dir DH2 -----rwed 86-03-20 00:00:00 0 Dir Foo -----rwed 86-03-20 00:00:00 2 974 DH0.info -----rwed 86-03-20 00:00:00 2 974 DH1.info -----rwed 86-03-20 00:00:00 2 974 DH2.info -----rwed 86-03-20 00:00:00 2 974 Foo.info Dirs:4 Files:4 Blocks:8 Bytes:3896 2.Network: I can access NET:DH0, NET:DH1 & NET:DH2 just fine from the CLI, but when I type LoadWB, and open the "Network" disk icon, I've got an empty window. Oh, NET:Foo works fine too, and is the same thing as NET:DH0. One odd thing: DHn.info do not seem to exist. If I try to copy them to another directory, I get "Can't open DH0.info". What is the Foo directory anyway, and who created it? Do those .info files really exist? Are the 1986 file dates normal? I believe that I have everything setup correctly because the network does work. The only thing mentioned in the docs about the Workbench is that "node.info" must exist in ROOT:, and it does. Here is a list of the files I've got, is there a newer version of the network? Archive parnet.zoo: Length CF Size Now Date Time -------- --- -------- --------- -------- 1700 35% 1099 19 Sep 89 03:14:18 net/Cable.Doc 182 18% 149 19 Sep 89 03:18:38 net/mountlist 7268 23% 5608 7 May 89 22:47:56 net/netmount 20424 36% 12984 19 Sep 89 00:14:48 net/netpar-handler 12548 34% 8223 19 Sep 89 01:45:30 net/netpar-server 974 60% 389 7 May 89 22:54:00 net/node.info 8464 45% 4654 19 Sep 89 03:02:42 net/ppn-net.doc -------- --- -------- --------- -------- 51560 36% 33106 7 files Any help in getting this to work with the Workbench would be greatly appreciated. Now a couple of general questions: How far has anyone pushed the ParNet? I've got 25 feet of cable between the A2000 and the A500, and everything seems to be ok. Can I get away with 50-60 feet to the A1000 in the other room? Are there any plans for multiple machine support? I need to feed both the A500 and the A1000 from my A2000's hard drive. I think that's it for questions, now for a big THANKS to the creators of this great network. An afternoon with the soldering iron and messing with the setup sure beats several hundred bucks for another hard drive! -- Blaine Gardner @ Evans & Sutherland 580 Arapeen Drive, SLC, Utah 84108 Here: utah-cs!esunix!blgardne {ucbvax, allegra, decvax}!decwrl!esunix!blgardne There: uunet!iconsys!caeco!i-core!worsel!blaine (My Amiga running uucp) OPUS LIVES!!!

The only thing mentioned in the docs about the Workbench is that > "node.info" must exist in ROOT:, and it does. ^^^^^^^^^^here's the problem I had this get me before with DNET. What you need to do is rename the node.info file to node.rinfo which is not explained anywhere in the docs. I read the Transactor article by Doug Walker and there was mention of a node.rinfo file. You can use any drawer icon for this file. Just make sure it is named node.rinfo, in fact you don't need the node.info drawer other than as a source for node.rinfo. I've been running this net quite a distance over flat cable (>50feet) but it does deteriorate. DiskPerf says that PARNET gets transfers of ~30K/sec. I like PARNET a lot but it not being bi-directional is a real killer for me. PARNET: and DNET: can't be accessed via things like UtiliMaster, SID and DiskSalv1.42 has problems too. DiskSalv will work if you assign a volume name to destination directory and use NOCHECK option. Even though the file gets across the net: DiskSalv can't do something to the file and then DiskSalv gets upset. I did get my harddisk salvaged across the net: but kept having to hit RETURN to ignore some error. Still better than using floppies. > -- > Blaine Gardner @ Evans & Sutherland 580 Arapeen Drive, SLC, Utah 84108 > Here: utah-cs!esunix!blgardne {ucbvax, allegra, decvax}!decwrl!esunix!blgardne > There: uunet!iconsys!caeco!i-core!worsel!blaine (My Amiga running uucp) > OPUS LIVES!!! -- Dwight Blubaugh, Technical Advisor, Ohio Valley Amiga Users Group (OVAUG) UUCP: {decuac,mit-eddie,phri,pyramid}!uccba!ucqais!blubaugh.UUCP INTERNET: blubaugh@ucqais.uc.edu USMAIL: send to me c/o OVAUG, P.O.
