Can anybody tell me what the difference in .lhw and .lzh files is? I just got a couple of files with the .lhw suffix and tried to unarc them with lharc, which told me it wanted a .lzh file. Is there yet another archiver (YAA ?) out there now? The files were the newtek demo from xanth.cs.odu.edu. Thanks -- "Hot Damn! After re-ftping into xanth.cs.odu.edu, I noticed a 'lhwarp-1.02.zoo' file. After getting this and then downloading I found that this was 'lhwarp' (what a surprise!), which is apparently a warp version of lharc (.lzh). This worked fine on the newtek-3 files. The demo looked real nice but wasn't much different than the orginal, at least in presentation. Definitly worth the time spent though. Thanks P.S. Please don't flame Mr. Figg, I'm sure he's already turning a brighter shade of red. -- "Hot Damn! Speaking of Lharc, is there a version for Unix? I have Zoo for Unix and it really makes things convenient. It would really be great if I had lharc too! Thanx, Vic Ricker vmr@hcx.psu.edu

The README in that directory (you should always read the README) clearly lists that you need lhwarp (available from xanth as /amiga/lhwarp-1.02.zoo) to play with .lhw files. (It works like warp, the source is included, and compresses disks really well...) ...tad

The file ending in .lhw was an LHWarped file. Yes, the author of LHARC created his own disk warper program, incompatable with WARP, that uses LZ-Huffman encoding. You need to get LHWARP to unWARP those files. LHWarp 1.3 is about the boards, and if I don't see it on c.s.a.b, I'll send it to Tad Guy. The suffix .lhw is used by the LhWarp program (from the same guy that did LhArc). It is similar to the Warp utilities going around (though it does lack some of their features), but uses the Lh archiving method. This usually (at least the author claims) results in files that are, on average, 20% smaller than a corresponding .wrp file would be. -- Christopher A. Has anyone actually got the version of Lhwarp available on xanth to work for reading? Whenever I try to read a disk with the syntax given in the .readme I get a whole screen filled with the word 'DOS' and then a lovely 'task held' requestor followed by a guru. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jack j_parsons@csc32.enet.dec.com

You need to set your stack indecently large. When I'm about to use lhwarp, I set my stack to 32767. (I then set it back when I'm through). ...tad

It was real slow, but I suppose that is normal for a warp type file. The second disk of the newtek-3 file had a boot block filled with 'DOS' and I get the impression (from seeing this before in the past) that this is normal for a non-bootable DOS disk. The lovely 'task held' requestor followed by a guru, is probably normal if thereis a problem with the disk :-) (That could be a brilliant quote). -- "Ain't got no fancy to | Michael Figg DSAC-FSD tickle" | DLA Systems Automation Center - Columbus,Oh mfigg@dsacg2.dsac.dla.mil
