[comp.sys.amiga] Which mail order place is good?

dalka@cbnewsc.ATT.COM (kenneth.j.dalka) (12/18/89)

With all the talk about which mail order places are
bad, I'd like to hear a recommendation for a good place.

SAFE HARBOR has been good to me. Low prices, seems knowledgable, prompt
service. Now, SH seems to be a small-fry operation running out of the
spare bedroom, but nonetheless very good. Call 800-544-6599.

For a big operation, I've been happy with Creative Computing.

I've had good service from Computability, and great service from LightSpeed
Distrubutors. The guy at LightSpeed really seemed to know his stuff.

My opinions are my own.

Last week I ordered some software for a Christmas present from Creative
Computers. They shipped last Friday FedX but shipped the wrong merchandise
(the order was written correctly). When I received it Monday morning I
called to inform them of the error. Today, Tuesday, I received the correct
merchandise FedX, no charge for shipping. Until they receive back the
wrong item my credit card will be double charged and I will probably be out
the cost of the complaint phone call, but at least the problem was
rectified promptly. All in all, a reasonable showing.

I've had good service from Lightspeed. But then again, I only placed one
order, and it was for four software titles. Called 'em up last Friday, and
talked to Barry:
Me: "Wanna get some software: blah, blah, blah, and blah"
	Barry: "No problem. Anything else?"
Me: "Nope. By the way, just what is blah one? Is it any good? Some
kids I know want it for Xmas"
Barry: "Never tried it, but here's what I know... (etc, etc), and
I've heard it's pretty good for a driving simulation"
Me: "Ok, sounds good. I'll get it..."
Barry: "Ok... that'll be a hundred bucks. Wanna send it UPS 2nd
		day air?"
Me: "Oh, I dunno... don't see why I should"
Barry: "Well, it's nearly Christmas, y'know. Might not make it by
ground. And it's only a couple bucks"
Me: "Oh... you're right! Good idea! Thanks! By the way, you sure
you have all this stuff in stock?"
Barry: "Yup. It's right here on my computer."
Me: "Fine. I get real nervous about mail order joints. Says in
your ad you guys are Amiga users. You got an Amiga?"
	Barry: "Yup. We don't lie."
(I think he was actually a little annoyed at me about that one... -ed.)

Anyway, he was nice, courteous, and helpful. The true test of a company
though, is what happens when you have problems. For this, I have no
experience with LightSpeed. The last place from which I ordered by mail
order went out of business, I think. And I'm glad- they weren't honest to
me about my shipment. That was Starflite Telemarketing. At the time, the
Amiga 500 just came out and they were the only characters that had any
around. At least my computer came on time...

I've had good experiences with COMPUTER DISCOUNT. I've ordered a buncha
things from them, and all has gone well. They are sometimes out of what
I want, but they tell you this when you order, unlike some places. And
the people on the phone know a little about their stuff--not just flunkies
taking orders.
