[comp.sys.amiga] Things look good!

I just called the Commodore 1-800 number to get a list of dealers in
my area, and I was quite amazed when they picked up on the first ring-
apparently they weren't kidding when they said they were going to
improve customer support! They lady was quite helpful and gave me a
list of 4 dealers in my area after just a fey key-presses on her
computer (gee, I wonder what kind it was...:-)

I visited the closest store she gave me, Software Etc. in Woodbridge
Mall. I expected to see the Amiga way in the back, showing the usual
"insert Workbench" screen, but was pleasantly surprised to see the
Amiga 500 right out in front of the store, playing the NewTek demo
reel 1 !! They also had two stereo speakers hooked up and it was
attracting quite a crowd. People were gathered in front of the store,
watching the screen in almost dis-belief. When I entered the store
three people were in line buying Amiga stuff (not just games, but
applications too!) Inside the store they were also playing their
"Etc. TV" video, which demos all of the machines they sell and for a
brief second it showed a clip from the "Juggler" demo, and one guy
said "Hey that's the Amiga juggler over there!" I asked the guy
behind the desk how the Christmas Amiga sales had been and he told me
"They've been great- we just sold our last box today."

Apparently Commodore's marketing scheme is working well. Last year
when you told someone you had an Amiga they usually said "A what?"
Nowadays people at recognize the name. Things are looking good!

GREAT! this is the kind of stuff I like to read everyonce in a while...
not just the same old "Amiga graphics are being surpassed by all the other
machines" stuff.... besides, the way I look at it, VGA might have more
colors in hi-res, BUT what software besides CAD programs and store demos
takes advantage of it???!!! Gimme Amiga or nothing at all!
(sorry folks, I just had to get that out... I've had a particularly
obnoxious customer today 8-)

I visited the closest store she gave me, Software Etc. in Woodbridge
   Mall.

Unfortunately, while here in Albany there are a few good Amiga
dealers, when I went to visit my parents in Springfield Mass, I found
the situation there isn't so hot. There was one store which carried
the Amiga within comfortable distance (the others were 30 or 40 miles
away); and when I went into Software Etc. after hearing that they'd
started to carry the Amiga in other places, I got a blank stare. I
guess they must be franchise-owned....

What really bugged me was that they carried the Sinclair Z-88. Ah
well, maybe they'll come around.

It does appear to be sporadic, but the knowledge seems to be spreading.
I was out shopping for a couple of programs before Christmas, and found
a slightly improved supply/shelf space at Electronic Boutique (although
mostly games), and a much improved image at Software Etc. I was able
to get help (and intelligent help, at that) from two separate people,
offering correct information on various products. There was also a
large crowd watching one of the guys playing Dungeon Master on the
store's A500. Their prices weren't all that bad, either.

Let's hope it keeps getting better. I've even got people at work
asking about Amy's capabilities. The most frequent question is
"When will they have UNIX for the Amiga?" I just keep saying,
Real soon now.
