[comp.sys.amiga] Hard Drive read causes non-guru crash

kpicott@alias.UUCP (Socrates) (01/04/90)

I recently ran across an "interesting" error while using my hard drive.
It's a standard SCSI interface, formatted into three partitions of size 20M
(OFS), 100M (FFS) and 200M (FFS) (a biggy, no?).

Anyway, some program which has still not been identified glitched and spewed
some stuff onto the disk, apparently at random. Certain files have now been
endowed with the "death touch". If I attempt to *read* (not write) these
files using 'more', 'less', 'copy' etc.. the screen blanks and is sometimes
accompanied by a white noise sound from the monitor.

This problem seems to move around to other files everytime the crash occurs
but... every disk that was in contact with my hard drive has been checked
with VirusX 3.0, so it's probably not a virus. If it isn't then I would call
this a serious problem; crashing the system when nothing "destructive" is
being done.

Has anyone encountered this behaviour before, viral or otherwise? It's
disconcerting to distrust any file that I read: expecting the system to spit
in my face if I pick the wrong one, or hitting that one file that wipes out
my 10M animation data. Any and all thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
