[comp.sys.amiga] RAM that ate Chicago

Any coherent guesses?
I bought my original A1000 in October of 1985. One of the very first north of
the border. Shortly thereafter, there appeared a homebrew memory hack to
expand the beast to a megabyte in Amazing Computing. It was non auto-config,
and had to be invoked with a "addmem 80000 100000" command. It worked beaut-
ifully always, until last summer when I had on long borrow, an Alegra, half-
Megabyte plug-in-the-side auto-config RAM expansion. Even when the machine
had the whole Meg and a half full and working, it was fine. And then I gave
the Alegra back. The first thing that I noticed that was wierd, was the
fact that WorkBench reported a full Megabyte without the addmem command.
With it, it went up to a Meg and a half. It still thought that it had the
Alegra, or something. Since then, WorkBench has reported anywhere from
three Megabytes, to up over 100 Mb. Mostly, it still thinks that it has
an extra half Meg. Some of the time it says the correct amount. Always,
the session ends in one form of a crash, or another. Sometimes immediately,
sometimes after several hours, but it Always crashes. This has stumped a
lot of competent people. Any ideas? I have a 2500 now, but my girlfriend
would like the computer I gave her to work, and so, sort of, would I.
thank you for any thoughts at all.
