[comp.sys.amiga] Latest version of UUCP

groo@dsoft.UUCP (Bill Squier) (01/02/90)

I'm currently running version .50 BETA of AmigaUUCP, the adapatation of
the GNUUUCP system (which in turn is based on uuslave, I'm told). I'm
searching for a more recent version of this software (or BETTER UUCP
software). I'd prefer not to have to use FTP, since that requires that
I wait until I return to school at the end of January.

Please send mail to save bandwith (...uunet!tronsbox!dsoft!groo). I'll
post a summary if there's a demand.

Actually Bill, I've been kicking this around for awhile... I have done
some extensive hacking on the source code for UUCP that I got (don't ask
me where: I don't remember :-(

I would be willing to email the binaries to anyone interested. [What
is the current state of comp.binaries.amiga? Should I mail to the
moderator instead and wait for a posting?]

The significant changes are:
implementation of C News designed to run on a two-floppy
system (not recommended, but it works! :-)
addition of ``real'' data to the SYSLOG file to look like
		the HDB ``xferstats'' log file
fixes for a few bugs and limitations
For example, the source that I got _WOULD NOT_ handle
binary transmissions at all -- it was using strcpy() to
copy data when it should have used memcpy(). Must'a been
		_REAL_ old stuff.
additions to fully support the Hayes-compatible modems with
a specific dialer (the only one, in fact :-)
ability to specify the timeout value during the expect-send
		sequences
support for multiple systems (and comments) in the Systems file

Currently I haven't written an Intuition interface for either the mailer
or the news reader (for a news reader I just use a Uedit program [Thanks
Rick, I LOVE Uedit!]). It does receive news with no problems, however.
It includes a 16-bit compress which I modified to allocate the
compression/decompression tables dynamically so it doesn't always use
436K of RAM. I also have ``atar'' which is my attempt at a UNIX tar
command without all the overhead of tar (this one still needs some
improvements).

Anyway, I talk too much. If you're interested, send me some email.
Return mail (electronic) will be about 4-5 days since I'm going out
of town for a week and my machine will not stay on. I've been making
some small hacks to it which are now complete, so Fred should be seeing
a disk from me in the next week or so.

I, for one, would LOVE to see it posted SOMEWHERE soon.
