Our academic computing center is considering alternatives for a networking system. It is looking for a UNIX network, if there are reasonable costs involved. One of the professors on the committee approached me yesterday concerning the Amiga alternative. Would someone send me some figures which I can give to the committee on these items of interest: 1. Speed of the machine 2. Eathernet capability 3. Number of serial ports which may be used for slave terminals 4. Availability 5. approximate cost. I know the unix workstation is out to the developers, but little else has leaked through. This is a potential chance for CBM to make a fairly substantial package deal with an institute, that could be used as a model for further networks of its kind. (Macintosh is already using our macintosh network here at St Olaf for such a purpose. The network works well, but the academic departments and programming population recognises that UNIX networks are much more useful. An official proposal from Commadore Amiga addressed to: Roberta Lembke, Dirrector of Academic Computing St. Olaf College Northfield, MN 55057 Would probably be the most fruitful. However, Speed is of the essance as the committee is currently working on the project, and is leaning toward an IBM LAN (sp?) network. (The Development which prompted my Comp Sci Prof to approach me.) Thank you for your time. (Any information will be appreciated. Please Email me your actions.) henning@stolaf.edu
