[comp.sys.amiga] still kicking after all these years

okay@tafs.mitre.org (Okay, S J) (01/16/90)

While we amigoids have been bemoaning the aging of our machines and how
the other systems are catching up, I'd like to take a moment to mention that
there are still tons of people out there who can have their sox knocked off
by a stock A2000.
Story:
I took my Ami to an SF convention over the weekend(EveCon in Crystal City, Va.
to be specific) since A. I was helping to run the computer room, and B. I
couldn't bear the thought of all the clones and Macs that would be there with
no Amiga representation in the room.
Well, my 2000 was doubtlessly the hit of the show. I ran a bunch of the
BADGE demos and had NewTek Reel 1 and a few of my own ANIMs I had worked on
running and you could hear the 'ooohs' and 'ahhhhs' down the end of the hall.
A few ST owners grudgingly conceded that some of the HAM IFFs I had were far
better than anything their machines could squeeze out...and then there was the
lone '386er who had just sunk $5K into his '386 VGA system grinding his teeth
in the corner("You mean its multi-tasking on top of all that!?!?!?").

As far as games went, there were about 2-3 people lined up to play 'Arkanoid'
and 'Populous' on the various STs and Apple IIs that lined the room, but around
12-15 constantly waiting for a chance at 'Gravity Wars' on my Ami. :)

Point of Story:
If you get a chance to show off your machine, take it. It really helps out
the machine's exposure and adds about 50-70 psi to your ego.
Its not that hard either....
A few BADGE demos, some sounds, a well-constructed slide show of your favorite
HAM pictures...thats really about all it takes.
I ran:
NewTeK Reel 1 & 3.
Walker & Walker II.
Klingon_Attack (my own ANIM)
Asteroid_field.anim
Lock_On (Another one of mine, still in progress)

All in all I think I probably sold about 10 systems just by being there....
(By that I mean I had about 10 people walk away saying 'I'm definitely getting
an Amiga now!' or ' Well, I'm glad I saw this before I got the Mac'..I'm not
a C-A dealer or VAR or promoter of any sort, just a hope
lessly addicted Amigoid)
And even though much of this is old hat stuff that would cause a 500 owner to
bat nary an eyelash, it certainly impressed the heck out of those who were there....
So remember,
We're not dead yet!
