[comp.sys.amiga] How good is new Fujitsu 136M SCSI Drive?

apdonsig@watdragon.waterloo.edu (Allan Donsig) (01/12/90)

There is a new SCSI drive out from Fujitsu....

	136 MB, SCSI I, 25 ms, 3 1/2", 1 1/2" thin
	$1499 CDN (~1100 US)

This sounds great for a Microbiotics hardframe or A2091, though
I wish I knew the max transfer rate...
Does anyone have any warnings for me about this combination,
or an alternate suggestion for a 100-150 Meg drive? I'd like
something at least as fast as 25ms. It doesn't have to be
a 3 1/2; I could mount it in the A2000's 5 1/4 bay.

I really don't want to go out and spend that kind of money and
end up with something I cannot use for some silly reason.

I've heard good things about the drives. They have a 3yr warranty (at least
in Canada), and have a look-ahead cache buffer making them generally faster
than 25ms (similar to Quantum drives).
I haven't heard anything about problems using them, and the distributor I spoke
to said they've seen the drives on Amigas (didn't say with which controller)
I'd also suggest you'd be paying too much at $1499 CDN. The wholesale price I
was quoted for the drive (# M2613S) was under $1100 CDN, and the M2614S (180 MB
) was only about $150 more.

As far as compatability is concerned, all I know is that the distributor I spoke
to said the drives have been used with Amigas, but I didn't ask with which
controller.

Seems as if the Quantum Pro-105S might be a better choice. It's
already very well supported by the SCSI interface manufacturers, and it's
quite a bit cheaper. I can find them easily here in the states for $750.
They format to 105 meg and the average seek is 19ms hardware and 11ms
when you take into consideration the cache...

At the World of Commodore in Toronto show I bought a Quantum P105S
from Wlad Anders at The Computer and You. I paid $1049
and am happily using it with my MicroBotics HardFrame.
	It is 11ms, 3.5", 105MB. Very fast.

Also, since you are at Waterloo, it should be pretty easy for
you to get it. I just talked to Wlad and he says they're now
selling for $1120. ($10.66/MB is pretty good in Canada)

I have done two mail-orders from this store and am very happy
with their service. Wlad is knowledgeable and friendly.
	Their phone number is 416-231-0205.

Hmm, I bought a 105 meg Quantum ProDrive (11 ms seek time)
for US $721.35 + shipping from Abel Supply. It works fine with
my Xetec FastTrak controller. Their number is 615-428-5100,
and they're in Tenessee.
