[comp.sys.amiga] followup on removing daughterboard

ggibeau@ucqais.uc.edu (AMOEBOID) (01/18/90)

This is to clear up some of the duplicate questions I have been getting
on the Kickstart ROM adapter card.

1) This card uses the Kickstart ROM, not EPROMS. If you use
Eproms, it takes 4 of the 27C512 at about $11.00/each, that is
$44.00 just for the Eproms vs. the $15 card + $4.00 for chips,
plus a kickstart ROM (1.2's can be had for free) and
2 PALs. We can post the CORRECT equations for the
PALs (the ones in the A1000 tech reference docs are incorrect).

2) This card is about 1.6" x 2.1" and will fit under the floppy
drive, with 4 Eproms, they will not always fit properly under
the drive housing.

3) By getting rid of the daughterboard, a lot of noise and
timing problems are cleared up. We have gotten machines running
with a hurricane and a Microbotics memory card, when the PAL grounding
alone would not clear up.

4) I guess I can post the entire article, since it has been pointed
out (numerous times :-)) that other hardware hacks have made the net rounds
before they actually saw print.

5)  The parts needed are;
        1 Kickstart ROM (either 1.2 or 1.3 or 1.4 :-) )
        2 each 74F257's
        2 each 74LS244's
        1 PALEN (CBM part # 252128-01)
        1 PALCAS (CBM part # 252128-02)
        1 40 pin IC socket - (optional)
36 standoffs (we use gold posts)
all chips except ROM CAN come off of daughterboard (for all of
you with moths in your wallets - it is not a pretty sight) :-).

Time takes about 1.5 - 2 hours, and is minimal soldering. There are also
a couple of trace cuts that have to be made depending on the revision of the
motherboard.

User groups welcome for group discounts - this would make an ideal
hardware hack of the month (GRIN).

Regards,
    those guys at UC (grin)
