I would like to apologize for my incredibly poor use of the english language
in
writing this message. I meant to imply that the A2000 just isn't powerful
enough
for my personal uses (neither is a Mac-II) and that I wished Commodore would
come out with something standard that had an '020 with an '881 on the board
leaving
the CPU slot open for something more useful like a good MMU (68851 or
something)
or maybe a really fast accelerator board. I had heard rumors of one such
machine
(anybody remember the ranger) and was wondering when it would come out
(albeit
rather sarcastically).

As to multi-tasking w/o hardware support, I have heard of good multi-tasking
(Unix
system clones) systems written for the XT! How hard would it be to write
something
comparable for the Mac-II? Some people have told me that it would be much
more
costly than acceptable, but still... I wonder.

Again, my apologies for cluttering up the bboard with such an offending
message. I
laugh myself (and shudder a bit) whenever I reread it. Thanks also for not
also
filling up the board with computer flame wars.

All I can suggest is for you to wait and what we and others come up with for
that "MMU" slot. Since Apple traditionally "does everything in software",
their speed advantage may turn out to be illusory. It is probable that some
time in the future we'll do a 68020 on the board A9999 or something, but for
now, everybody is going flat out on A500 and A2000 related work.

Check out the interest in Andrew Tannenbaum's "MINIX" operating system. I
expect that ports for the Amiga, ST and MAC will be along before too long.
I don't think it will displace the native operating systems, however it does
provide an alternative and since it comes with source code, anybody can hack
on it as suits their interest. It's talked about in comp.os.mixix...

In a recent post, I let loose with a slew of what I now know to be
misinformation about the Commodore 2091 hard drive controller.

Please disregard any information you may have gleaned from my post
 - little or none of it was correct at all, and I formally apologize
for any problems I may have caused anybody.

To correct myself: The 2091 *is* shipping and has been for quite a
few months. It is not being recalled - there are no problems with
the board at all - feel free to ask anyone with one.
