[comp.sys.amiga] Memory Expansion on the 500

hill@evax.arl.utexas.edu (Anthony Adam Hill) (01/23/90)

     Hello,

I was wondering if anyone with field experience or techinical
knowledge has any comments on expanding the 500 memory internally.

Specifically I am interested in the Centaur Mini-Max 2meg expansion,
the EXP-8000 8meg by Progressive Peripheral, and the Spirit Tecnologies
series of boards. Also any info on MAST's Mini-Megs external expansion
    boxes would be nice.

Here are some of the questions I have: (but feel free to add your own
       comments as propriate)

-- Ease of installation (time and level of expertise necessary)
-- Price of hardware and type of chips it uses.
-- Expansion limitations it places on the system.

Also I would like technical comments on exapnding of the 500 memory
wise. Can the 1meg Agnus access 1meg of CHIP on the 2meg expanders?
What speed (150, 120, 100, 80ns) RAM chips does one need? Will it
adversely affect my system power wise? (I KNOW it is unwise to add things
to a 500 with a stock power supply.) If so is it repairable with a
heftier power supply? (A quick electronics lesson would be appreciated!)

I will post a summary if I get response enough. If it has been hashed
out already please send me a summary. I will ask if it can be included
    in the monthly question/answer posting.

Thanks in advance to all that answer. And I hope we get a
comp.sys.amiga.hardware to handle things like this.
