Never having bought a Psygnosis (sp?) game before, I succumbed to the "Shadow of the Beast" hype at Amy Expo and bought a copy. So far, I've booted it up four times: 1) Watch intro screens, begin play. Find and treetrunk doorway. Climb down ladder, mess about, then try to jump chasm. Game ends and locks up. 2) Rebooting after 1): Watch intro again, avoid treetrunk doorway, find wishing well. Enter. Climb down to dead end, then climb up to find dead end. Game prints out taunting "You made a mistake" message, and locks up. Turn off computer in disgust. 3) Next day, after disgust dissipates, reboot "Beast". After inserting Disk #2 as per prompt, game locks up immediately in video fireworks mode, with attendant horrible squealing sounds on both audio channels. 4) Rebooting after 3): Watch intro screens. Hey, look! It's not so boring, anymore! The title screens have all kinds of garbage in them now! Looks like Archon playing on a 2000! Turn machine off. Suspiciously, my battery-backed clock thought it was April 5, 1978, the next time I turned my Amiga on. My system is an Amiga 2000, with GVP hardcard, Fatter Agnes, and 2M of expansion RAM. I run VirusX from my startup-sequence (whenever I'm not booting from a copy$#%$@%#protected disk, that is), and believe my system is uninfected. I wonder if you folks would help me conduct a survey. If you've bought S.O.T.B., would you drop me an e-mail reply indicating whether the product worked for you or not? I'll post the digested "yield" of the game. Brian Rhodefer

About Beast: I am almost certain that the long waiting times are not but there for no reason. Likely, the program is doing some heavy-duty configurations. About playing it: Yes, it is rough getting through those spikes. What you have to do is kneel down right in front of the red monster, and punch his lights out. It's a matter of timing how many lives this will take; the spiked CAN be avoided. If anybody has made some progress into the castle (y'know, the one way to the east, where you get the torch), let me know. Brad

Stop before punching. Then some guys try to drop bombs on you. When you see one coming from the left, run back to the left so the bomb doesn't hit you. Then stand an inch or so away from the bomb, and when it explodes jump onto the place where the bomb was. You get 3 bombers. The 4th zooms in low and you must duck. Then punch the two bouncing skulls, and get to the ladder down. Look carefully. A green dart jumps from wall to wall, so you must wait till it's gone, descend, then wait at the bottom of the ladder to kill it. Up the next ladder. A red blob appears out of nowhere. You can't (?) avoid it hitting you so just ignore it or it'll get you more than once! Jump off, punch the mouths that jump at you, avoid 2 crossed volleys of swords, punch another mouth, and then punch the chest for 2 extra lives. Then the hard bit! Trapdoors open and men throw daggers at you. Green monsters jump at you, and black blobs drop from the ceiling. Not easy - a bit harder than the red dragons in the caverns. Once past that, there'll be a statue that jumps up and down the sides of the ladder. To get past it: when it starts going up the way, get onto the ladder but don't climb yet. Wait till it gets to the top and when it starts to move down again, GO! It should miss you. At the top,go right. Kill the grim reaper, then there are 4 chests. The last one has a nasty inside it that fires arrows. The others all have 4 lives. Get all of them, keep going, punch anything that moves. At the end there is a spanner. This is used to disable a force field later. Grab that, head back. Keep going left, and follow the ladders till you make a big jump which takes you near the entrance. Head left, time it past the spiders/worms/barrels, down the ladder. Again, keep on moving. The headless corpses that jump on you are a bit tricky to hit, so care there. Duck the red blob rather than trying to punch it. Down the ladders at the end, and left again. Kill whatever assails you, punch the chest to get a gun! Head back right. When you get past the ladder you just came down, a volley of missiles comes at you. Duck down and pump the fire button! Further along, you get to the force field. Crouch beside the control and press fire. You'll see our main man undoing the device with a spanner. Continue on, up the steps, jump off (but avoid the candelabra) and shoot the barrel. Up the stairs and go right. Shoot, shoot, shoot, down the ladder, shoot, shoot SHOOTSHOOTSHOOTSHOOT...(another) volley of missiles dealt with as above. Then down the ladder to nice old Mr 3- headed dragon. It's weak spot is a red blob towards the back, so you have to get close in to hit it. Time the dragon's firing at you, and jump accordingly. Pump it full of lead, go along a bit, and you get a jetpack, the scene changes, the music changes and the game becomes impossible, and if getting to the end of that bit is virtually impossible the end-of-level guardian is REALLY impossible. #------------------------------------------------------------------------------# # If you're of the opinion that if anything CAN go wrong it WILL go wrong, you # # may think you're paranoid. at the part where there are 3 chests with +4 lives, at any point where the game loads a new screen, if you go back to the same place (after another load... 2 total) the chests will be there again, and you can re-refresh your man. (nice after you get the gun if you take a few hits in the process) (I have only seen this. I havent gotten there yet on my own) jason nyberg

[arrgh! its line eater wars! no, save me!] Hello all. I've been playing Shadow of the beast alot lately. I'd like to find a cheat mode for the game, but so far none of the recommended strategies seem to work. I've tried pressing both mouse buttons on the "Reflections" screen till it asks for the next disk. Joystick and Left mous button on both the "Beast" screen and the red duplicate of the picture on the box until the next disk prompt. Any other recommendations? Or am I missing something? COuld someone be a little bit more specific about what to do? Thanks in advance, ---Ezra Story *--------------------------------------------------------------------------* * This is my first UseNet posting, so go gentle on me. * ------------------------------------------------------------------------ * All opinions and comments are my own (who elses?)..hehe *-----------------------------------------------------------------------
