There's a program called SID106 that is similar to a lot of the 
"Directory Utility" programs, but with a *BIG* difference; this one is 
quite intelligent.  It looks at a selected file and analizes it to 
determine what default action to take.  (Note: the program analizes the 
file CONTENTS, not the EXTENSION.)
 
It currently can identify the following:

 (Assigned logical file)
 (Directory)
 Executable Object
 Font Header
 IFF Graphic
 IFF Sound
 IFF Music
 IFF Text
 .info (Icon)
 Lattice Object
 LHArc
 Manx Object

 PAK file
 ProPage Document
 Superbase File Definition
 Superbase Query
 (Volume)
 WARP file
 WordPerfect Document
 ZOO
