   TITLE: DevCon III news!
   Henri Rubin comments:
Are you sitting down? AREXX is going to be an official part of 1.4!
      YEA!
Sometime AFTER 1.4 there will be scaleable outline fonts. 1.4 will
support enhanced bitmap fonts with limited scaleability.
1.4 *WILL* integrate WB and CLI much much much better. YEA!
      Harry Copperman comments:
1.4 *WILL* integrate WB and CLI much much much better. YEA!
They are working on a "VAR" program.
They are stressing getting machines into Higher Education - read
      colleges.
They are attempting to gain a more "professional" image.
Stress standards <not FORCE standards> and make a more concerted
effort to exploit the unique featuers of the Amiga.
Gail Wellington standing in for Jeff Porter:
     A2630 - 25MHz 030, 2meg <std> 32 bit fast ram, up to 4 meg on board,
with dauguter board with up to lots of additional 32 bit
               ram.
A2090B - Slot filler that will cause A2090<a> to autoboot.
     A2091 - A590 quality controller for the A2000 - integrated DMA/SCSI
               controller, 2meg ram, hardcardable, etc.
A590 - in release - small quantities as yet. <Above items range
               from someday to "rsn".>
     A2500UX - now an 030 machine with 2091, 100megs 19ms HD, AT&T sys
               V 3.2.
A2232 - Multiport <8!> serial card with ADOS and UNIX drivers.
A2024 - shipping in Europe. Vendor problems fouled up release in US
               so far.
     A560,A2060 - ARCNET cards for the A500 and A2000 - supports NOVELL
network once it passes validation suite.
     A2350 - Genlock an framegrabber.
     A2360 - Video card - 1024x768x8bits of 16e6 colors.
ECS update: AGNUS going into machines now is ECS AGNUS. Denise is
still in reserve <and if mine is a criterion they have
              bugs to fix...>
1.4 at a micro glance: <by Andy Finkel, the man who killed the Guru.
Interfaces not frozen yet - anything we have is up for discussion and
bug finding - and I did.
      features:
      AREXX
ASL.library - similar to but better organized ARP.library.
      Commodities exchange
Simple refresh character mapped console windows with text level cut
      and paste.
      DOS library in C. Yeah!
ECS support - bigger blits, more CHIP, etc etc
ENV: is to be a handler instead of an assign.
Exec - execbase and stack in FAST ram, virtual memory HOOKS <only>,
new power up strategy <may break some odd things...>
FFS in ROM - so floppies can be FFS or OldFS.
Intuition: - like massive changes Bunky! Intuition.base is GONE.
autoscrolling, overscan, public screens, custom gadgets,
new string gadgets, new state machine, etc etc etc
KEYMAP - usa 1 now in ROM.
Layers - better dedicing, backfill for windows.
Preferences; - massive changes! Handler rather than fixed file -
                builds capabilities list dynamically.
      New timer device calls.
      Trackdisk worked over
WorkBench is now a library! Add and remove menu items! More asynch -
ie it speaks multitasking! Faster drawers, better icons and font
         support, etc etc etc.

   Phew - That's it from DevCon SF for tonite - - -
   Ok, that's it....

   Joanne.
Thanks, fascinating stuff. Can I re-post your message on Cix, the UK
   CoSy system?
The A2024 is not shipping in the UK, although we have Moniterms.
   A560/A2060 -- who is writing s/w -- OXXI?
ECS Agnus -- fitted to A500s now? There was a mistake in Germany and a
load went out but is it now policy?
I'm not very techie -- what do the 1.4 features you talked about do?
1> What will an ASL.library do
   2> What is Commodities exchange
3> What is the effect of removing Intuition.base?
4> If Guru is dead what happens when the machine stops <crashes>.
Please let me know which details are safe to print for a mid-August
   on-sale date.
   oh..
5> What is a new state machine.
   Thanks.

1> Everything... Actually much of ARP becomes part of the other system
librares and ASL includes much of what is left such as the system
     standard fil,font, and list requesters.
2> Ask jimm - it is a standardized way of handling hot keys in the
system so that pop-cli or funkeys do not collide with WonderFmarbles
or somethig else wanting to use the same hot key.
3> People who poke undocumented or documented but "you better leave it
alone" type private are going to break.
4> System message instead of Guru....
5> Instead of nested if's and cases and .... it is a program based on a
set of states and well defined transition conditions between those
     states.
I should be much more reliable for the user.

1.4 is going to be worth doing RIGHT. THere will probably be
some very private conferences started here to discuss
implementation issues with the people here at DevCon and some
who could not make it. This will take a long time to hash out
and C= is LISTENING to the developer community quite well it
    sounds like.
   done!

Real, or not, I felt everyone should read this to get what they want out of it.

My only question, is WHEN? If it's the 1.3 scenario again, we should
see it in about, oh, a year???
Well, as long as it gets here before Mac's system 7.0....
