[comp.sys.amiga] Ultracard Problems

brandonl@amadeus.WR.TEK.COM (Brandonius) (02/03/90)

In addition to poor documentation, I have three problems:

	1. The documentation states that there are stacks included
in the "Ideas" section of the ControlRoom.
		There aren't.

It says to ring their BBS. Fat lot of good that'll
do if you don't have a modem.

	2. Everytime I try to use the program disk by opening a stack,
then closing one, a requestor says the disk is full.
So what? I'm not changing a thing. It will not even
		cancel...so it hangs.

	3. You're supposed to add:
		ASSIGN ULTRA: DH0:

to your startup_sequence. I did, then rebooted.
		It hung. Nice.

I am going to see if I can return it, but I am so disappointed with this
supposedly "promising" product, that I will not consider it again. It
is typical of too much Amiga software with erratic, poor standards.

This is another advantage of the Mac world ...S/W standards are higher.
No, I don't own one. But it seems to me that you can have all the potential
power in the world, but if you can't use it well, it's effectively useless.
(or greatly diminished)

This is not the first program of such poor quality that I have encountered.
Just another one, and another,...

No sarcasm intended, but you get what you pay for. I was lucky
enough to win UC. Otherwise I might have bought it. I think it's plain
I have strong feelings about UC. It was very buggy. Mike Lehman
started posting updates to his BBS almost once a week and yet the
program kept crashing. What really bothers me is that he has no
intention of fixing the problems with UltraCard. He instead has a new
program called UltraCard Plus which of course has an upgrade fee.
Basically he left the owners with the choice of paying more money or
using a program with the utility of the original PageStream. At least
PageStream has finally fixed their problems and is NOT charging for
upgrades. I have not heard one good thing about UC. You might try
exchanging the program for CanDo. CanDo does what you wanted UC to do,
although at close to triple the price.

If I start evangelizing too much about UC/CanDo please someone warn
me. If flames are appropriate I'd appreciate the courtesty of Email
instead! 8^>

[Bad Stuff About UltraCard Deleted.. too bad it can't be done to the
program that easily]

I just encountered these advantages just last night. I'm working on my
Formal lab report for physics. I simple 15-20 page report, with a few
graphs, and a pain in the ass.. so I decide how I'm going to start it.
I have A-Max, 3 drives and 3 megs, with MicroSoft Works & Cricket
Graph. I can make graphs and clip them directly to Works, where they
will be integrated with the data (also clipped from Cricket Graph). Add
to this some nice fonts, WYSIWYkindaG, and decent Speed (I **DESPISE**
Multifinder, but it IS getting the job done, and isn't too complicated!)
   I have the Amiga 2000, 3 megs, 40 meg HD, 2 floppies, & Modem. I
have WordPerfect, which is fine for the text, but what about the
graphs??? (They would have to be semi-structured graphs to be usable,
not just IFF Pics, which tend to get warped). I couldn't find a
solution (Use Dpaint? Yeah right... Use text chars.. sure, might as well
be doing it by hand..)

Oh well.. guess that's why I bought A-Max in the first place (And am
glad I won't have a need for it [hopefully] after this weekend... we got
some new software on the Vax that should do some of these things)
