[net.general] Usenet host count surpasses Arpanet?

bill (12/21/82)

After looking over the most recent usenet map sent out by Karen Horton, I
was rather impressed by the sheer number of hosts listed. I thought I'd
compare the number of hosts listed in the map with the number of arpanet
hosts in the host table on my local arpanet site (rutgers). Their table was
dated 1/5/81. The count stood at: Arpanet: 372, Usenet: 421. This must
say something? Comments, flames to net.followup.

Usenet only has a hundred more hosts than Arpanet?? I'm disappointed.
I had expected double the number. There's no surprise that Usenet is
bigger, it's just an example of positive feedback. Arpanet, on the other
hand, is expensive to hook into and carefully controlled. Of course, it's
also more reliable.
