I like most music in the right context. (Hard Rock seldom, Opera rarely) But I consider that I grew out of Rock (as my favorite) sometime in College. I have listened to more classical since then, but mostly I was drawn away from Rock by ** JAZZ **. Any comments about non-Rock music being sterile obviously stem from jazz-ignorantes. Jazz is a very broad category, as is rock, and often has fuzzy boundaries on its definition. What does jazz have to offer? Melodies that are not beat to a pulp in 3 and half minutes, but rather extended and improvised on. Beats that are light, fresh, and different. Instrumentalists that listen to the rest of the group while they play and have supportive counter-melodies to contribute. Instruments that are not all rhythm oriented, so that when one is not soloing, he doesn't feel obliged to add his 26 cents worth of noise. Yes, I know there are groups and songs that fit this description in ROCK. And, that some jazz doesn't fit this, ( and in fact is down right abrasive.) These were just generalizations to describe why I listen to jazz more. Happy Listening, whatever you like, - Fred P. Andresen (fpa@cvl)
