[comp.sys.amiga] Does anybody know any good puzzle games?

jsmith@alias.UUCP (Jeff Smith) (02/02/90)

I just played an interesting game on a friend's Mac. I forget
the title, but it involved solving a LOT of puzzles which gave
you pieces of a map, kind of like a jigsaw puzzle.

My friend thought that the game had been ported to the Amiga, but
wasn't sure. Does anybody know the game? Does anybody know of any
other games for the Amiga that are based on puzzles? I'm tired of the usual
fare of shoot-em-ups and adventure games and am looking for an interesting
alternative. I am working on a word-game package, but somehow, playing
your own software seems a little less than fulfilling.

Thank you for your help, in advance.

I too enjoy a mind stretching game more that an shoot-em-up. Dungeon games
require problem solving (Dungeon Master and Ulitma are 2 good examples) but
there are a plethora of such games out. Some mind games I can recommend are:

Emerald Mind - Pick up gems by solving certain aspects
    Prospector - Sorta like Emerald.
War games - Kampfgruppe, Gettysburg, Blitzkrieg at the ardennes (Last one
could use a little improvement)
Chess Games - Yeah, Chessmaster 2000 looks great, but Sargon III is better
Sim City - Fun and enlightening.
The Enigma Device - Nifty Crytoquiz game.
Scrabble - The version I have can't keep correct score.
Risk - Soon to be released (so I hear)

Fred Fish also has some neat PD games that require thinking. Not too many of
the simple, but hard to solve puzzles of the old 8-bit machines. More
graphics and less puzzle on the amiga. Hope this helps. Also Tetris,
(although I like the pd version "stienslaug" better) is archade and thinking.

There is a PD game called "Wanderer" on Fish Disk 216 that is very
similar to these games (though not commercial quality). It is GREAT fun,
and it has a "screen generator" mode for building your own puzzles. It
comes with about 60 screens.

How on Earth could someone leave out Shanghai. This is the most popular puzzle
game one the Amiga, and it multitasks beautifuly. This one is a must for all
users. Also, Obsesion - a nicely modified tetris, is GREAT and FREE. It adds
new life to tetris with more shapes, sound samples, and special effects - like
pieces that explode when hitting others or pieces that go through others.
These options are turned on and off with little switches.

I know they're not exactly puzzle games, but they do require thinking.
You should check out:
Empire : EA (I think)
Kingdoms of England : Incognito Software

Both of these are military strategy games. They are the best two such games
IMHO, on the amiga. (I especially like empire.) Try them out !
