[comp.sys.amiga] 3000 and workstations

news@caen.engin.umich.edu (CAEN Netnews) (02/17/90)

Hi. Well, I just got back from a presentation by IBM. They have released
a new family of machines. The family is called the System/6000 family.
They range from desktop to rackmount machines. They are mid to high
end workstations. Most importantly, they are exceedingly fast (RISC) and
have wonderful graphics and are inexpensive (as far as workstations go).
I think that if Commodore has any plans of making waves in the UNIX workstation
market, they had better release their machine NOW, and it had better have
very very good graphics. None of these low resolutions are going to cut it
in a workstation (engineering oriented) market. If you are interested in more
info on the System/6000s, I'm going to be posting something on them later, or
you can write to me. I accept flames.

		See ya, Ralph Seguin

Preliminary specs for their least expensive (?) desktop:

MHz: 20
MIPS: 27.5
MFLOPS: 7.5 (IEEE double precision)
1 branch/instruction unit, 1 floating point unit, 1 fixed point (integer) unit
4 or more stage pipeline in each of the units.
Built in interlocking.
Price: $12,995 for base unit.

base unit includes : 120 Mbyte hard drive, 8 megs ram, 1280x1024 mono monitor,
4 Microchannel slots, AIX version 3, full suite of
software, ethernet, plus more, 3.5" 1.44M floppy.

The deskside units are even more impressive. The clockrates range from 20 to 30
MHz. The high end system has a peak of 13 MFLOPs and 41 MIPS. There are lots
of options also: such as optical fiber network connector, space for 256 megs (in
some of the models), Z buffers, high end graphics (color and mono), more slots
and considerable space for disk drives.
