My neighborhood in Chicago has suffered a rash of burglaries over the last several months. My neighbors and I are searching for ways to fight back with the minimal expenditure of time and money (no expensive alarm systems or time-consuming neighborhood watch programs). We think the best approach is to help the police catch the thieves and wonder whether there isn't some way to trace electronically an item that is taken from a house or yard. What we have in mind is a small transmitter that would be concealed in a stereo for example which would broadcast its location. We would also need some kind of receiver to determine where the transmitter was located. The transmitter would not have to be very powerful since we believe that the thieves probably live within a half mile of us and maybe as close as several hundred feet (our neighborhood borders on a very poor area). Does anyone know of any commercial device that would fit the bill? Alternatively, does anyone know how one might go about constructing something that would work? And are there any legal prohibitions against our little project (we would work with the police of course, once the technology was in place). Tired of being ripped off David Fay ihnp4!ihuxs!dafa
