[comp.sys.amiga] USING MORE THAN 1MEG CHIP

darrell.grainger@canremote.uucp (DARRELL GRAINGER) (02/13/90)

The test to see if you have 1 megabyte of chip RAM is to open Dpaint
with HiRes OverScan AND 16 colours. If you are forced down to 8 colours
then you have 512K of chip RAM.

An easier way to test for 1 megabyte of chip RAM would be to go to the
Shell/CLI and type AVAIL.

At the risk of presuming, that test won't work for everyone. I'm not positive
about this myself, but there are those (locally) who are convinced that thehy
have the 1 meg Agnus in the computer, but it's not enabled for 1 meg chip RAM.
I know that the new Agnus will, if inserted but if no traces/jumpers are fixed,
act just like the old one and report 512K CHIP. They want some kind of test
which will show what type of chip they have without opening the computer. I
personally doubt Commodore would ship computers with the new Agnus disabled,
but then they've done boneheaded things before... anyway, I hear there's some
kind of program somewhere that will detect what version of chip(s) you have.

. <<<<Infinite K>>>>

BTW: I have the new chip and I must say it's nice to be able to run two copies
of DPaint III with 150 frame anims each... and still have interlaced WB, etc...

Commodore is *precisely* this boneheaded. Actually, I don't know if it's
really boneheadedness, it might have to do with the fact that an A500 ships
with on 512K of *any* kind of memeory, so they have to disable Agnus.
At any rate,I know that they ship them disabled, because I recently confirmed
that I have the 1 Meg Agnus by looking at the serial #, but even with 1 full
Meg of memory on my A500, it reports only 512K chip.

*SIGH* Looks like I've got some soldering to do...

Ah, poor baby! I suppose you expected to have them ship it enabled with 512K
so it would crash as soon as it started up, unless you purchased a A501 when
you bought you machine but then you would have said;
-------- Severe Whining ------------
But I don't want to buy an A501!
-------- Severe Whining off --------

Or maybe you expect them to trash instock 500s and start shipping them with
1meg on board. But then you would say;
-------- Severe Whining ------------
But I don't want to pay more for a machine with 1meg that required a complete
motherboard revision, I don't need a full 1meg right away!
-------- Severe Whining off --------

Maybe they should have done what apple would have done and not install a new
Agnus, until a motherboard revison was done, and make you buy the new one
on your own, but then you whould have said;
-------- Severe Whining ------------
This machine is brand new, why should I have to pay for a new chip, the A2000
people don't have to!
-------- Severe Whining off --------

I have been an Amiga dealer, and I have talked to CBM personel from the
disctrict sales manager, all the way to the engineers. The are competent
people, who just happen to have every answer to your 'Why did the boneheads
do this...' comment, they even had an extremely proper answer to MY 'Why havent
you released UNIX over here yet?' -- If you must know it is because the front
end dealers would not be able to support it one little bit, and this is so
damn true, since most Amiga salespeople are 22year old hackers that would have
no clue when someone called and said, 'I have some 'c' code that compiles fine
on my Sun4, why won't it compile on this thing, or, this Unix application isn't
running on this thing, why? '

The moral of the story, I don't care how smart you are, whining at CBM won't do
anything but annoy others. If you have a suggestion, make it. If you have an
opinion, say it... But make sure it is justified, and please stop whining.

There is a little program that comes with A-max that when run will tell you
whether you have the 512K Agnus or the new 1Mb Angus. I think it's called
CheckChip.

sparks@corpane.UUCP (John Sparks) (02/17/90)

Ok folks, here is how you can check if you have the 1 Meg chip or not.
this is a program that goes and asks the chip itself to tell whether
it is the old or the new Agnus :-)

Of course they would! In fact they do - mine, a UK model, was supplied as
such - I opened it up to find out though. If you're prepared to mess about
with links then why be scared of finding out if you've got a 1meg agnus by
just taking the lid off?
I've never heard of this program but, from what I've heard all A500's with
serial numbers over 520,000 should have the new agnus in, although
disabled. As I don't know the US serial number range this might not be any
use, sorry.
