[comp.sys.amiga] Experience with other floppy drives?

mark@titan.tsd.arlut.utexas.edu (Mark Whiting) (02/23/90)

I am in the process of getting a second floppy drive for my Amiga
500. A friend of mine has had a MAST Unidrive for his 500 and has
had no problems with it. I notice that MAST has now come out with
a successor to this drive that has additional features (such as
detecting writes to the boot sector), but don't know if this new
version is worth the extra money. Also, CENTAUR has been advertising
something called "The Silent drive" that does not click when the
disk is removed. Has anyone had experience (good or bad) with any
of these (or OTHER) drives? I would also like to know of your
experiences with the mail-order firm(s) you bought your drive(s)
from. Please Email replies, since I am unable to read this group
every day. If you think your advice would be useful to many other
readers of this group, you may post AS WELL AS Email. Thank you!

[For those of you who are wondering why I don't go with Commodore's,
I looked at the A1010, but decided against it for several reasons:
1) It's much larger than the Unidrive, taking up more desk space.
2) Its power requirements are greater.
3) Its price is no lower than the Unidrive (~$130 mail order).
4) I am not as confident of the reliability of "real Commodore" equipment.
5) Our "authorized Commodore dealer" in town does not have the most
scrupulous way of doing business :-( .

Thank you for your Email advice! It is very much appreciated.
