[comp.sys.amiga] Just a few questions.

esd@cbterra.UUCP (11/19/87)

[Please bear with me, I haven't done this in a long time.]

Well, I'm open for suggestions, and I would like some assistance from
you guys in NETLAND. My gorlfriend has an A1000. The question is,
should we upgrade. I only have a few questions.
1) How much should we expect to pay for a reasonable hard drive?
Keep in mind that I've seen all this stuff on the WEDGE and it
sounds pretty good, but how about an outside opinion. It seems
as though C= is going with SCSI drives for the A2000. Can we
   put one on the A1000.
2) How can I put an '020 in the A1000? How much does it cost?
Does it come with an MMU? ... an '881?
3) How can I get IBM PC compatibility out of the thing and for
   what price?
4) In general, is the A2000 upgrade a goood deal, or should we
wait for a couple of months when the A2000 is available at
a discounted price (hopefully between $1200 and $1400)?
I would appreciate a prompt response as we all know that the
upgrade offer expires soon. Thanks in advance for your help.

eric

Well, this info may come to a shock to some of you, BUT IM doing a group
buy with some friends, and we can get the Pheonix 500 and 1000 hard drives
at a VERY GOOD Price.. by VERY GOOD I mean, between $600-650. The A1000
version supports up to 4 megs, sits on-top of the machine, and is buffered.

The A500 version cannot accept 4 Meg, but it does buffer and it sits to the
side.

They are BOTH SCSI drives, and can take 7 scsi devices, they are both DMA
and there add says they have the potential to transfer at rates of approx
4 MegaBytes per Second (though I cant see it going that fast on the current
file system). All interested people should contact me (ie send me mail)
I think the most we wanna handle at this price is about 10, we are gaining
NO profit from doing this.

Well, im getting info from one of my users on my BBS, he says he can get
internal piggy-back boards that have a 68020/68881 sockets and cost approx
$310. The 68020 and 881 cost about $250 and $200 respectivly and depending
on what speed you get the price is different. When he gives me the info
I will either re-post or mail direct to all those interested. again, send me
some mail.

BTW No , it does not come with an MMU

Hello net.

	Question #1

I talked the local recording studio guy into getting and
Amiga. :^) He got a 2000 with a second drive, but got an external drive. I
remember that there are a few strange complications if you have a df2 and no
df1. Can anybody shed some light on this for me.

	Question #2

He got MasterTracks v3.51. When we tried saving the
preferences to a write protected disk in df0: the system hangs with the
sleepy cloud. Now, is this part of the df0/df2 problem, is it a MT problem,
or has it been fixed in MT v3.6 (which is out but he didn't get. I did
suggest that he get the upgrade)

	Question # 3

Which Harddisks/controllers have the problems with the
overscan files? An why? (I know this has been discussed before but I skimmed
those messages.) :^( Do they hang the system or just slow it down.

	Question # 4 ( I ask alot of these don't I :^))

Which printer driver (WB 1.3) is the best to use with a
Panasonic 1192 24pin. I've tried the CBM driver and the epson driver and
they just don't do the fonts the justice I expected of a 24 pin printer.
Sigh.

	Thanks bunches...Tony

p.s. Follow ups to c.s.a.hardware, I'm sending through the amiga-relay and
I'm not sure how to get this to .hardware.
