[comp.sys.amiga] Compugraphic characters in PPage

I have PPage 1.3 and I was having problems too. Make sure you work off of
working diskettes, not your masters, because it appears that PPage has to
write some temp files. I assume this may be 'disk caching' related to the
memory- hungry outline fonts.

I hope you know some CLI. What I tried to do when I got a requester for a
nonexistent device (I think it was PPCache: or something like that, when it
boots up) was to pull down the screen, reASSIGN the diskette I was using as the
device name (this is ugly, but nothing else got me past square zero, including
trying to read the manual), then, after the requester was satisfied (CANCELing
it resulted in the problem you described), I reASSIGNed it back. It worked. I
haven't played with it enough yet to find a better solution. I suggest a
letter to Gold Disk. As much as I love Ami and appreciate the difficulty of
writing a dynamite desktop publishing program, I still find, after lots of
money spent and numerous upgrades, that I'm still kind of disappointed.

Oh, one last word. If you run off your own Workbench rather than off the PPage
diskette, you'll get fonts that are too wide for the requesters. Either boot
off PPage and set the Preferences to your liking or reASSIGN the font directory
to the PPage diskette, preferably before running PPage. Hope this helps.
