[comp.sys.amiga] NewTek Demo3 and 1 drive

jwhitman@STL-06SIMA.ARMY.MIL (Jerry Whitman) (03/03/90)

The NewTek DEMOREEL3 is best run with two floppy drives, but it CAN be done
with just one drive. Unfortunately the results are not optimal and you get
hyper-extension of the disk-eject button pushing finger.

To go through the process takes about 30+ disk swaps while the demoreel goes
back to the data disk to get more info. Sometimes it only takes a second or
less and you have to swap the disk back. As a result you see a lot of
requestors and a very dis-jointed display that appears to be incomplete. I
would not recomment doing it if you are trying to impress someone with the
AMIGAs finess.

So, how does one run it properly if only one drive is available? I have a
vanilla 2000HD with no extra drive and one meg of memory.

I tried copying the two disks into the HD and assigning each volume name the
directory path name containing that volumes files. When I cd'd to the
volume name and executed the demo It would start up and build the RAM files
and then just quit. If I put the Data disk in df0: the demo may or may not
get as far as building the sand textured backdrop for the NewTek billboard.
By reversing the procedure (DemoReel in df0: and using data from the HD) I
got similar results, but occasionally it would get to the point of the
stereo car horns.

I could not find a common thread as to why the extent of operation was so
variable.

Since I only have one meg of memory I doubt that I can affort to build a
virtual disk in core and still run the demo. Can I build a virtual disk
in an existing partion of my HD? I rather suspect not! Is there a way
to build a virtual floppy on the HD without having to dump my HD and
reformat it?

At this point any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated!!

I got Demo-3 to install on my harddrive using their pre-written
"install on a HD" program. Though, when it gets to the "Get Really
Close" picture, it just skips it. It's as if the file isn't found so
the program just skips to the next sequence of animation/sound/etc.

Has anyone else had this problem? It all works fine (just slow) from
floppies.

Amiga 2000B, GVP controller, .5meg chip; .5meg slowfast; 1meg fast ram,
140meg SCSI HD, DF0 and DF2 floppies.

I had that problem too, and that went away when I moved those files
which were placed in RAM: to my HD and made some necessary assigns.
I guess there just weren't enough memory for that picture ( .5 MB
slow-FAST RAM, .5 MB chip RAM).

But now it won't play that music when showing those pictures in the
second section of the demo :-(
