I did one simple comparison with a single, 90% full disk with about 10 files of varying sizes. With CrossDos, the command COPY * NIL: took about 2:09. With MessyDos the same command took about 1:10. You may draw your own conclusion here. I did not test write speed, but I think the times will not differ that much in this case. I think I can guess why CrossDos is slower on reading.
