[comp.sys.amiga] AMAS sound digitizer/midi controller

cjhoward@lotus.waterloo.edu (Caleb J. Howard) (02/28/90)

Hi there. I have a problem that I was hoping someone might
be able to help me with. In August last, I bought the AMAS
sound sampler/MIDI interface for my 2500. I'm primarily
interested in digitizing, so I have no comments on the MIDI
part of it. When I initially purchased it, I received the
2000/500 version of the hardware, but I had only my 1000, so
it sat idle until I got my 2500 in October. When I tried it
out then, it seemed not to do anything. I booted in 68000
mode with the disk included, but the software didn't seem to
respond to any signal I gave the hardware. Further, even with
the hardware disconnected, although no signal was being displayed
in either of the oscilliscopes or the frequency responce bar
graph, the signal strength indicator showed the input signal to
be too strong.
I sent the thing back, and Michtron sent me a new one.
The new one wasn't marked as 1000 or 2000 specific, but since I
clearly stated that I wanted a 2000 version, I assume that that
is what I got. Well, this one does exactly the same thing. I
tried it on three machines (a 2500, a 2000hd, and a 2000). I
get the same thing on all three.
Does anyone out there know how to help me? Am I missing
something? Has anyone made this critter work?
Thank you one and all for your kind attention.

what signal strength indicator? too strong for what? please describe for
me your setup and what you're feeding into the digitizer.

the only difference between A1000 and A500/A2000 versions is the
configuration of the serial/paralell ports. If you had the wrong version
you wouldn't be able to plug it in. (You did plug it into both serial and
parallel ports, right? You should only need the parallel port if you're
not doing MIDI, but I'd plug it into both to be safe, esp. if you are
having problems.)

   tried it on three machines (a 2500, a 2000hd, and a 2000). I
get the same thing on all three.

I've had an AMAS for a couple months and never had any problems with the
hardware (the software is another matter--it had a virus and a (small) bug
which I'm told I can get fixed by sending in (another) five bucks).
Anyway, I'd make absolutely sure that your signals coming into the
digitizer are correct. Are you using the RCA jacks or the microphone jack?
I really can't help any more without more info about your setup, but I
suspect the problem is not with the A.M.A.S. unit.
