[comp.sys.amiga] Looking for good Database/Hypercard-like program

hurd@bcrka145.bnr.ca (Scott Hurd 1617227) (03/09/90)

Greetings, Netland:

I am looking for a good PD/Shareware/Commercial program which
does simple database management. I do not need the capabilities
of a full-featured relational database, merely the ability to
define fields, create reports, mailing labels, etc. The ideal
program for my purposes is Hypercard on the Mac, but I want to
get something for my Amiga.

I have looked at CanDo, but was disappointed with it. I
played with it for several hours at a local dealer's store, and
while I could do trivial things (add buttons to existing cards,
duplicate cards, etc.), even the simplest 'tougher' operation
seemed very difficult (I kept getting 'error - unable to
compile object' for a button I was trying to create, and there
was no further explanation as to what the problem was). I also
did not find an easy way to create a 'background' for the entire
stack (so that when a new card is added, it automatically gets
all of the background fields assigned to it).

Perhaps I have just not played with it enough. I am not
really interested in the multi-media aspect of things, just the
'cardfile' capabilities. I want to be able to print arbitrary
reports based on the information in the cards (mailing labels,
summaries of fields, perhaps arithmetic manipulation).

I have recently taken a look at something called 'Hyperbase'
from General Design. This is a shareware program, and the version
I have says 1987 on it. I have had no end of problems with this.
It constantly Gurus after about 5 successive invocations (something
about 'unable to open console window'), it sometimes gurus on exit
with a 'memory already freed' guru, and it eats more and more memory
each time it is run. I think the principle of it is good, and it
would serve my needs, but it is far too buggy.

Anyway, what I would like, is a list (via Email) of good
programs (full featured) which will handle the requirements above.
Hypercard is the only program I have seen to date which is extremely
easy to use, and clearly fulfills all of my requirements.

     Thanks for the help,

     Cheers,
     Scott.
