More seriously, this is a special opportunity for undergraduates to participate
in our second annual Nation Science Foundation "Research Experience for
Undergraduates" at the American University in Washington, D.C.
When: Mid-May 1990 until Mid-July 1990
Why : To learn what "real" research is like.
How much: *YOU* get a $2,000 stipend and FREE room and board on campus
(you must live on campus though, it's not that bad :)
Who can do this : Any undergraduates who are AMERICAN citizens and are
knowledgable in Pascal and Unix. Familiarity with 'C'
is also helpful.

O.k. now for some more techie info about what you would _really_ be doing.
This "research experience for undergraduate" (REU) project is based on a
grant from the NSF. The focus of the project will be on "intelligent
systems" (including neural nets, expert systems, and communictating agents).
You will be experimenting with software development tools and developing your
own software and intelligent systems. We have several grad students doing
neural net research, so there is a possibility for collaborative work. In
addition, there will be opportunities to publish papers about the research
carried out.
I did this last summer, and it was a great deal of fun and I did learn quite
a bit about what research is like. You have plenty of opportunites for seeing
the Washington D.C. area, and general touristy things (if that's your bag).
You meet some really cool people and make good contacts. If you can do this,
and are interested, it really is the ticket for a summer job.
