All, Does anyone out in Amiga-Land know of a Word Processor that doesn't keep all DATA (TEXT) in memory?., but saves parts of the TEXT to a temporary file? I mean, why have the whole document in RAM, but have it on disk. This way a 512k Amiga owner could write a 700k file and not worry about RAM being sucked away. This would be good even for users with 9 megs of RAM. I know 9 megs is a lot, but a 44meg removable hard drive (GVP) could hold a huge document. Its true that using the floppy drive would be somewhat slower, but for those who have hard drives wouldn't have to worry. What do you Amiga lovers think?? I know I'd like atleast the OPTION. _____________________________________________________ / //// / / / //// Paul Cardwell / Amiga / / \\\\//// ccucard@indsvax1 / Rules!!! / / \\//// Indiana State University / / /______\/\/______________________________/___________/

You may get what you're looking for, although not directly from WP programs... 1.4 is supposed to support virtual memory, which should enable you to do the things you asked about, plus much more.

RE Disk-based word processors Don't know of any for the Amiga. Someone here once said that Word Perfect worked that way, but I've never seen a copy of WP. I WISH we had disk-based word processors. Because of the huge amount of ram Pen "Pal" eats, it won't edit the same size files as I used to do on my C64 with geoWrite, which was disk-based. I know that sounds strange, but it's true. I've successfully loaded in a 600K document on a 1 meg machine. With the hard drives up and running, I had only about 850K when starting WP. I don't really like it, since I usually print with a good AGFA DTP (like ProPage or PageSetter II), but if I had a better printer, WP wouldn't be too bad. If only 5.1 was out on the Amiga! WordPerfect does this, and lets you choose how much RAM to use as a buffer for your text. -- +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Ralph Doncaster Don't Steal - The Government hates competition. | |880274d@AcadiaU.CA 329 CHI, Acadia University, Wolfville, NS B0P 1X0 | |UUCP: {uunet|watmath|utai}!cs.dal.ca!aucs!880274d BITNET: 880274d@Acadia |
