  To recap several other postings:

CANONONICAL LIST OF MOST USEFUL PUBLIC DOMAIN SOFTWARE
[Some are freely redistributable, not PD; some begware]

  1. Browser: allows one to view directories, copy files, etc, a la MAC
  2. Snap: cut and paste ANY stype font from ANY window on ANY screen.
  3. ARP1.3: Replaces most AmigaDos commands with smaller more powerful
  4. VirusX: Kills viruses dead! get it if you do more than play games.
  5. Switcher: Jump from 1 screen to another easily. Has a bunch of
  6. Scripit: Does what Arexx does, without Arexx headaches!!! A must!
  7. Dmouse: OR Qmouse: mouse accel/screen flipper/screen blanker
  8. HandyIcons: makes a drop-down menu on WB with your favorite programs
  9. NewZap: object code file editor - edit any file Byte-by-byte
 10. sf: (Show File) - searches for all files matching pattern on a device
 11. VLT: Possibly the best terminal emulator out for the amiga.
 12. XOPER: System Monitor
 13. STEVIE: A fairly good implementation of the un*x editor.
 14. DME: a programmers editor. One of Matt Dillons amazing products.
 15. SHELL: I use version 2.07 but newer better(?) versions are out.
 16. wKeys, wIcon: give keyboard equivalents to window front/back, screen
front/back and a general window iconification.
 17. uShow: smallest iff file show program. Fast and featureless but also
      reliable.
 18. dfc: replaces format and copy commands
 19. VT100: Terminal emulator

 Let me add:

 SpudClock: Talking clock
MemWatch2: Monitor low memory for pointer errors. More programmers
should use this (or something like it).
A68k: A good assembler that Charlie keeps improving.
Access1.42: Reliable terminal for normal BBSing.
MiddleButton: Makes a 3 button mouse useful with 1.3.2 & previous.
SRT: Modify Display Alerts & catch a lot of gurus.
 BlitxFonts: Speed up screen printing.
 SetFont2.5: Change fonts.
ConMan: Upgrade CLI with many features.
DiskSalv: Pull your fat out of the fire.
InstallBeep: Modify the screen flash system error to the sound of your
choice. My Amiga laughs at me. [Drives the IBMish nuts ;-)]
PPrefs: Better than preferences & MoreRows
 ls: Bearable directories
 Cal: Like the Un*x Cal(endar)

     Which leaves...

        DATABASE?

        SPREADSHEET?

        WORD PROCESSORS?

        WYSIWYG WORD PROCESSORS?

Let us not forget VD0:, Perry Kivolowitz' wonderful asdg.vdisk.device.
RAM: is OK for transient work files but doesn't survive a re-boot.
I have never used RAD: and have no intention of ever doing so.

(BTW thanks for the A68k plug, Harvey!)

Necessity is the mother of the re-invented wheel.

I use MyMenu which is similar to HandyIcons (they tell me). It makes
my computer easier for the whole family to use. My wife is a shanghai
junkie and now she boots the machine and double clicks on the games/
Shanghai menu item and off she goes. Also WordPerfect!

In an aside I have to say that my A1000 with FacII, 3 floppies, VD0:,
WShell, MyMenu, Conman 1.3, ARP 1.3, and WorkBench 1.3 is just as easy
to learn and use as a Mac. I have proof! A buddy is staying with me
and in two days he became familiar enough to boot the system and use
WordPerfect to create his resume and cover letters. The biggest
lessons were the Kickstart/Workbench cycle, menus/mouse and mouse clicking,
and how to find the floppies in my storage case. I think this shows
the type of utilities that should come standard with the Operating
System.

Now we need outline fonts and generic SCSI devices. Is it in there?
For sure?
