[comp.sys.amiga] Hardware/software questions and comments

maltasr@csusac (Robert Maltas) (03/22/90)

Several questions:
1) Has anyone with a GVP controller had any success using those erasable
SCSI drives advertised by Briwall? Also, what are their speeds/access
times? (PLEASE.....only those people who HAVE one of these beasts
hooked up to their GVP contollers, respond).
Similarly, what about the 660 meg WREN drives.....do they work with
   the GVP controller?
2) **For those people with A2286 BridgeBoards, what type of expansion
boards are safe to use (i.e. work without a hassle). I'm interested
in adding a SCSI harddrive to the IBM side (since the IBM partition
on my Amiga hard drive is dog SLOW!)....a SCSI hardcard would be nice.
**Also, anyone out there using a streaming tape backup on their IBM
side to backup files on the Amiga side, or is ARead/AWrite too much
   a hassle to use?
**Does anyone have an Telebit TrailBlazer internal card working on
   their IBM side?
**Lastly, what brand of memory expansion boards work in the AT slot of
the BridgeBoard? Preferably, I was hoping for one with 2-megs RAM along
with a multifunction board (ser/par/game ports) all on the same card.
3) Is anyone out there using the Bridge Commander......that device that
lets your Bridge Board access the Amiga 3.5" drives as 720K drives,
   supposedly transparently? Comments-----good/bad/??
4) Assuming 1 40-meg hardcard, AT BridgeBoard, CGA/parallel half-card, 7 megs
   ram, 2 internal drives.....can I still add a hard-card, modem, and
multi-megabyte expansion board to the IBM side, and multi-serial board
to the Amiga side without overtaxing my power supply?
5) I know this has been asked before, but.....Is there anyway for me to
have a small TV screen, say a 2" X 2" (with volume), displayed on my
RGB monitor while I'm working with the Amiga....perhaps in a window
which I can drag around to any position on the screen. I would like
to do this while I'm still in RGB mode.
6) What would I need to do in order to get ROMWack to run off of one of
the ports on a multiserial board?
7) Has anyone removed the internal 3.5" drive from their Amiga 1000 and
installed it internally into their A2000, or into an external case?
Any special modifications needed? How about the faceplate....where can
I find a faceplate to match the eject button on those A1000 internal
   drives?
8) Is there a program that I can run on an A1000 to test it and make sure
that everything is A-OK? You know, test memory, test parallel port,
serial port, keyboard, half-bright mode, modification to the audio,
to see if any extra memorybeyond 512K was installed, to check for internal
clock, etc, etc.......if such a program/programs exist, please mention
the name/names and an ftp site where I can grab them.
9) Does anyone have the A1000 Toolbox working with a fully populated 8-meg
ram card and a 40-meg autoboot hardcard?
10) Are you sick and tired of these damn questions?

Now, let me respond to previous postings: I've purchased and used 1000 MEI
disks sofar, and only 7 bad ones. Also, 500 AT and 300 XT disks from MEI,
with no problems. And whenever you do have a problem, call them up....they are
quick to respond and will do nearly anything to keep the customer happy.

If you are looking for inexpensive ram chips, try McDonald & Associates,
2544 South 156th Circle, Omaha, Nebraska 68130, phone: (402)-691-8248.....
they advertise an 800 number in the Computer Shopper, but I don't have it
handy. When I purchased my ram chips 2 months ago, they had the absolute
lowest price in the nation on NEW 1-meg X 1 DRAMS. And get this: I ordered
4-megs of 120 ns. chips, but they were out of stock, so they said I would
get them in 2 weeks. Well, I did receive them in 2 weeks, but instead of
being 120 ns, they sent me 100 ns. at no extra charge!

As for mailorder firms, LightSpeed was great....when I was in search of a
a second internal drive, I wanted one with a faceplate that matched the
color of my case. While I waited on the phone, the salesman went into the
warehouse and grabbed an Air drive, pulled it out of the wrappings, and
compared the color with his machine. Now is this service, or what?

Have a nice day.
