[comp.sys.amiga] Harddisk for A500

BEB@UNO.BITNET (Bruce Bettis) (12/16/87)

Sure would like a hard disk for my 500. I just started reading this group
(bless it) and missed descriptions of the WEDGE. Is this an A2000 thing
that I'll need an expansion box for or...?
I've seen the add for the Pacific 2 slot thing, but hell, you stick in your
memory card, your controller, and whoops, out of slots. I'm sure I could find
*something* to plug into a third, fourth, or tenth slot, for that matter.

Does anyone know of an expansion box with big power supply, fan, four or more
slots, etc, for an A500? (For those of us who like to build hulking monsters
a hunk at a time)

Thanks in advance for the answers to all my problems.

In response to your question about expansion hardware for the A500,
I have attached to my A1000 a prototype version of the Bills' Boards
Bus Expander, it has six Amiga slots, six IBM slots, currently running
a A2088 with 40MB of hard disk (20 for Amy and 20 for the IBM side)
the developers are using it with an A500 to run their CAD programs
in an Messy-Dos window. This board was shown at the Commodore Show
in Anaheim, and I understand it was reviewed in Info, and LAAUG's
newsletter, Scanlines. The board is finally about ready to go into
production. There was an extended delay while waiting for a Bridgeboard,
but testing is almost complete.

Well, I am almost afraid to ask this question because it is asked so often,
I know that I was sick of seeing it so often. But now I guess it is my turn.

I am now in the market for a hard disk system for my Amiga 500. I have not
even got a clue what is out there let alone how much it is, what the specs
are, etc. I wonder if you could send me (email in order to spare those who
are also sick of this question :-) the name of the HD controller that you
use, and what the specs on it are. Like, is it DMA, does it have room for
ram, can it be put into a 2000, all that kind of stuff. I know that the
Commodore A590 is kindof slow and expensive for only a 20 meg drive. I have
heard of Xetec, GVP, MAST and maybe 1 or 2 others but I have no idea what
the specs are or how much they cost. I have heard that the Microbotics
controller is the one to get for the 2000, do they also make one for the 500?
If not, is there an economical way to put a 2000 card into the 500?

Thanks very much in advance. I will summarize the replys that I get and
save them in a file on my account. Then when I see someone asking this
question again (which should be in about 3 weeks :-) I can just email them
what I got for replys. In the summer time I saw a comparison posted for a
bunch of controllers for the 2000, maybe I could do something similar for the
500 and then post it.

	Hi!

I have some questions about harddisks for the A500, so if someone
could give some answers to them, feel free.

	1. What is a filecard, and is it only for the A2000?
	2. I'm thinking of buying a harddisk, for my A500, with more than
20 Mb capacity, and about 2 Mb additional RAM memory on the
disk controller board. What configuration of harddisk and
	   diskcontroller shall I buy?
	3. Has anyone heard about the Gigatron's internal harddisk
for the A500 (Price and size)?

		Thank's in advance.
