[comp.sys.amiga] Connecting a new power supply to your Amiga 500

For anyone who is thinking of hooking up a new power supply for
their amiga 500.

First you need a suitable power supply. On the back of your 500's power
supply it gives the power requirements need for your computer. I bought
a 200 watt power supply which in theory is capable of 4 times the
amperage of the 500's power supply. A 100 watt power supply should be
more than enough, just make sure that it supplies more than
+5 volts @4.3 A,  +12 @ 1 A, and   -12 @ 0.1 A,  which is what my
power supply is rated for. Try to find a power supply with a long
warranty, and make sure you have a diagram of the wiring of the power
supply.

I opened up my 500's power supply and cut the leads off from the cord
right at the power supply board. Using the pinout diagram from
the back of the 500's power supply and the diagram that came with the
new power supply I connected the power cord up to the new power supply.
I plan on soldering it right into the power supply at some point in time.

As I remember wires are like this
    power cord       AT power supply

       black     <->     black         ground
        red      <->      red        + 5 volts
       white     <->     white       -12 volts
       brown     <->    yellow       +12 volts

I did not connect the yellow wire from my power cord to anything.

Please note that the wires in other power supplies are not necessarily
colour coded in the same way. If you don't know what you are doing
don't try it. If you want to test out the power supply before you
connect it up you may have to put a load between the ground and +5 volt
leads.

My power supply will handle more accesories than I will ever be able to
put on my 500. I have been using it for 6-7 months now and have never had
it reset itself like it used to.

good luck.
