[comp.sys.amiga] Extend CBM EDUCATIONAL DISCOUNT?

Michael.Witbrock@CS.CMU.EDU (03/22/90)

I'm hoping that the educational discount is an experiment which C-A will
decide to extend. It's probably good policy, since IBM, Apple, Sun,
NeXT, all
offer outrageous bribes to hook people on their systems (AND
peripherals) whilst they
are at university.

If I understand corectly the current educational discount (where are
authorized amiga dealers are able to sell educational systems) is considered
an interem program. Ultimitaely CBM hopes to have specifically designated
educational dealers who are well suited to support education as well as
having only one dealer for each educational market. While they are in the
process of selecting these dealers they are offering the current program.
And sales under this program is one of the criteria for selecting the
educational dealerships.

I talked to my local Ed Dealer last night (Yes on a Sunday) and he had
received the new price list for the continuation of the general Ed program.
I don't know if CBM has extended the special 'for those of us who saw the
potential of the Amiga years ago' pricing on parts, but the buy a complete
machine bundle and any parts you want deal is definately going on.

Also, this past week CBM attended the Computer Assisted Language
Instruction Consortium Conference (Calico) and showed off their Authoring
system as well as the machine in general. Even as a Beta test version the
program looked pretty good. It is Icon based module oriented with an Arexx
port. I was asked to come up with a short demo lesson for display during
the software showcase and without reading the manual, I was able to do a
lesson using Sound samples, their built-in simple graphics capability, still
images, animations and the SAY type voice. People who have been working on
interactive education for years were impressed both with the ease of doing
the lesson and the performance/price of the Amiga.

Disclaimer.............
I am NOT beta testing AmigaVision CBM's Authoring System. All impressions
are based on about 5 hours infront of the screen over the past week setting
up the machine for a new beta tester and my efforts at creating a small lesson.
