[comp.sys.amiga] is there a jove port?

rolee@jarthur.Claremont.EDU (Profess'nal Agitator) (03/27/90)

With all this talk about an emacs emulator for the Ami, I have a related
question:

How 'bout jove? Is there a PD port of jove to the Amiga?

No, there isn't. I corresponded with the author of JOVE, Jonathan
Payne, and there is no such port in progress.

So, I decided to port it myself. (DEFINITELY my favorite editor.)
I wrote to Payne, asking for porting guidlines.

Payne responded that JOVE was in the process of being "cleaned up"
by another programmer. He asked me NOT to try porting JOVE to the Amiga
until the source is reorganized:

:You might want to wait a while. Some friends of mine are cleaning
:up the code in ways that might help. They are splitting out the
:system-dependent things in such a way that you might just be able
:to rewrite those parts.

Well, one of the "friends" responded like this:

>From moraes@church.csri.toronto.edu Mon Jan 8 17:40:36 1990
:Yeah right. Alas, thanks to my being absolutely drowned in work, I'm
:afraid I haven't gotten too much done on cleaning out ifdefs....
:...
:As to porting, sigh. It would have been much simpler if we had cleaned
:up the code before the ibm-pc and mac ports as part of getting it
:ported to those machines -- 20, 20 hindsight, huh?
:
:If you start the port, please try and keep the changes isolated --
:preferably in two files -- amiga.c and amiga.h. I really wouldn't
:advise porting Jove at present....

I will contact these people again and see if any progress has
been made.
