[comp.sys.amiga] programming joystick HELP!!?

anyone have any short examples of using
the joystick gameport??

programmers guide to amiga is rather terse on the supject
and does not give me the info i need.

i want to be able to make a simple function call and
see if any messages have been left for the gameport device.

i assume that you mean the blocking reads that 
the example does. yes.... that is a pain in the A**

i tryed to find away around the blocking read but never could.
i have a "main_loop" i want it to just return if nothing
has been done but i cant get it to do that.

any info would be appreciated
