[comp.sys.amiga] Information found on HP DeskJet downloadable fonts

ethan_r_dicks@giza.cis.ohio-state.edu (04/10/90)

Here is the body of a message I recieved today. Since I had people inquiring
about downloadable fonts, I thought I would post it. When I last checked,
a RAM cartridge, with either IBM or MAC format disks with Helvetica and
Times-Roman in various sizes, ASCII character set only (not many funny
squiggles) was about $125! With that, I am going to see what it takes to
convert Amiga fonts to be DeskJet compatible (unless someone else has already
done that)

Without further adieu...

You don't really need a program to download DeskJet fonts. I generally
just do a binary copy of the soft font file to the printer. The only
trick is first you must send an:

Esc *c#D

Where # is the soft font ID that is to be downloaded next. Hence I
have a series of files named id1, id2, id3, id4 and so forth.
Then I just copy id1 to the printer and then copy the soft font file.
I do this all from batch files on my PC but I'm sure the atari lets
you do binary copies. As long as you have an editor that lets you
embed escapes you should have no problem.

By the way, I do this on a PC because it is much faster than our HP
supplied DeskJet download program (MS-DOS only of course) -- especially
when downloading to a DeskJet+.

Enjoy,
