I plan on (FINALLY!!!) getting an amiga at the WOC show next weekend. Lacking the funds for an '020 accelerator, and not wanting to run into the compatibility problems I've heard of from the Processor Accelerator, I've decided to get a 68010 for a slight speedup. I already know how to replace it (I think.... just swap it with the 68000 and put decigel in your startup sequence?), but I have a few other questions: 1) What's the diff between DeciGel and SuperDeciGel, and where can I get SuperDG? 2) From what FTP site can I get (not in zoo'd or arc'ed form.... don't have ami yet...) the text file that explains the speed increase an '010 will cause? I know I've seen it somewhere but now I can't seem to find it. 3) Someone suggested to me putting in a 10 MHz 010 instead of just 8, and changing the crystal. It seems to me this wouldn't be such a hot idea, because the custom chips run at 7.14 MHz. (If it were that easy, you could save the price of a processor accelerator (unless you wanted an FPU) by simply plugging in a 16MHz 68000). Would this work? How much would the chip & crystal cost? 4) Anybody wanna buy a used c128 in about a week? Please e-mail replies; if there's enough interest and I have enough time I'll post a summary. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------- Don Lloyd El Campeador don@vax1.acs.udel.edu | | |Gibberish is | DISCLAIMER: don@pyr1.acs.udel.edu | | |spoken here. | My employers are idiots. I am considering purchasing a 68010 for my Amiga 2000 and I have a few questions: 1) How compatible is it? I mean, really? None of this theory stuff. 2) How well does the deciGEL program work? 3) Where is a good place to get one at a reasonable price? 4) Can somebody with a 68010 please report on the success or failure of the following programs: Falcon Excellence Romance of the Three Kingdoms Tetris VLT Thanks... -=*=--=*=--=*=--=*=--=*=--=*=--=*=--=*=--=*=--=*=--=*=--=*=--=*=--=*=--=*=- Mike Conca, Computer Science Dept. * conca@handel.cs.colostate.edu Colorado State University * conca@129.82.102.32 'Back off man - I understand computers!'

Time for the weekly 68010 info request. I seem to remember that this
topic was removed from the monthly info post. It should stay there.
michael> 1) How compatible is it? I mean, really? None of this theory stuff.
I've been using a 68010 in my A1000 since December 1986 with no
problems. However, I run relatively few pieces of commercial
software, esp. games. Basically, my attitude is that if it doesn't
work with the 010, I throw it away.
michael> 2) How well does the deciGEL program work?
pretty well, though I've never had the occasion to use it.
michael> 3) Where is a good place to get one at a reasonable price?
From an ad for The Krueger Company in Amazing Computing:
8 Mhz 68010 $1.00 (is that reasonable enough?)
12 Mhz 68020 $30.00
16 Mhz 68030 $40.00
The ad only gives phone numbers: (800) 245-2235, FAX (602) 820-1707.
It says to mention Amazing Computing.
michael> 4) Can somebody with a 68010 please report on the success or failure
michael> of the following programs:
michael> Falcon
michael> Excellence
michael> Romance of the Three Kingdoms
michael> Tetris
michael> VLT
VLT works fine, don't know about the others.

I mean, really? None of this theory stuff. It's extremely compatible. I used it for about a year, before moving on to 68020s and so. The two main potential problems are with MOVE SR,<ea> and in handling bus error exceptions wrong. I don't know of any program using bus error handlers other than SetCPU, and in fact never ran into a program that didn't run on the 68010, so I suppose this is more of a theoretical concern. > 2) How well does the deciGEL program work? DeciGEL completely solves the problem in the Motorola supported way, by handling the exception. This works great unless you're loading something that requires you to reboot the machine, at which point DeciGEL is lost. There is apparently an execption handler that'll install itself as a RAM resident module that survives reboot, so perhaps there is a complete fix. I've solved the problem myself by avoiding any software that requires me to reboot my system. > 3) Where is a good place to get one at a reasonable price? Don't know where, but if you pay more than $10, you're not getting a good deal. The 68010 will give you at most maybe a 20% peak speedup, though I think it's probably more in the 5% range typically. > 4) Can somebody with a 68010 please report on the success or failure > of the following programs: > Excellence > Tetris > VLT I've run VLT myself and seen Excellence run on a 68030 machine, so I'm certain they work on a 68010 machine. The PD version of Tetris I have works too; not sure if they all do, there are so many versions around these days. Try Blockout (California Dreams) if you like Tetris, it works on all 680x0 Amigas. It's a really cool 3-D Tetris-like game. > Mike Conca, Computer Science Dept. * conca@handel.cs.colostate.edu -- Dave Haynie Commodore-Amiga (Systems Engineering) "The Crew That Never Rests" {uunet|pyramid|rutgers}!cbmvax!daveh PLINK: hazy BIX: hazy Too much of everything is just enough

Try JameCo Electronics in California... you'll pay about $14.95 there... that seems pretty good from what I've seen. Misc. Comment: I haven't noticed the minor speed increase at all. I'm not sure it was even worth the $15 I threw into it. I'm not really upset, just disappointed... However, we should realize that you're almost never going to get something for nothing, and expecting a different chip to move significantly faster with the same clock is misguided. There is some slight improvement, but don't expect anything really noticable. +--------------------------------+--------------------------------------------+ | Jeff Bevis | "But I don't like spam!" | | bevis@en.ecn.purdue.edu | Give me Amiga or nothing at all. | +--------------------------------+--------------------------------------------+

Could someone send me a list of programs that will not work on the 68010? I got mine today and put it in (I'm still shaking!). Anyway, I want to know what programs not to bother getting. Also, could someone point me to a copy of Decigel? I guess it's supposed to help some programs use the '10. I am also going to be selling my A500 (1 Meg, CA-880 exter., 68000,68010) this summer as I will be getting an A2000. Can anyone tell me realisticly how much I can expect for my 500? I need to know so I can plan now. Can someone also tell me the part number of the fatter agnus? I opened my Ami up for the first time and I have the part number. It's: MOS 8370 1788 23 I doubt it is the Fatter Agnus since the computer is nearing 1 year old. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks, AMH
