I've recently come into a little bit of money and would like to buy a hard drive for my A500, could anyone give any suggestions? E-mail 'em (or post 'em if you want) Daveman Remember Chickadees have episodic memory davidb@psych.toronot.edu brodbeck@vm.utcs.utoronto.ca

Does anyone out there know of a harddrive for the Amiga 500 that is connected to the computer by a cable instead of having the drive's board plug into the computer. Where my Amiga is on my desk it gets moved in and out from under the shelf my monitor is on, and I think that a harddrive that connects directly (no cable) case to case would get damaged . I have read about "The Vault", a 20 meg drive with an 8 foot cable so it can be placed on a shelf, under external floppies, etc. The price was about 600 US, but I don't know the distributor, manufacturer or of anyone who sells them. If you know who makes this please let me know, and if you know of any others I would like to know about them as well. L. Todd lowe Acadia University Nova Scotia, Canada

um, it'd be trivial (sorta) to put together an 80 connector ribbon cable to give you an extension cable so you can place things up on a shelf if that's what you want. But I don't think that'd be a good idea ... See, when you do somethin like that the ribbon cable not only introcudes all sorts of noise sources into your system (the wires make a fine antenna for certain frequencies -- there was a formula in High School Physics that'll tell you what frequency a wire of a given length is good as an antenna). But *also* you're introcuding more delays into a possibly very touchy set of timing assumptions. Remember -- 11 inches = 1 nanosecond. (And keep a vision in your mind of Grace Hopper holding up a wire and saying "This is 1 nanosecond"). -- <- David Herron; an MMDF guy <david@ms.uky.edu> <- ska: David le casse\*' {rutgers, uunet}!ukma!david, david@UKMA.BITNET <- <- The problem with mnemonics is they mean different things to different people.

I am looking for a good hard drive for the A500... If anyone knows of any <preffereably inexpensive> drives between 20 and 40 megs, please let me know of what type of interface I would need, etc... I have never cared about hard drives before until I needed one, so I am very inexperienced about the terminology...
