[comp.sys.amiga] GAMES: Drakkhen

802360644%RUMAC%UPR1.UPR.CUN.EDU@ncsuvm.ncsu.edu (Angel Asencio) (04/10/90)

Hi everybody,

Sorry to use bandwidth for this but I erased the message of Peter C.
Green, and now I don't have his E-mail.

Here goes:

Thanks Peter, for the advise, I only have two word to express how I
fell about Drakkhen;

IT'S GREAT !!!!!!!!

BTW, to the interested;

This go especially to the role play gamers, this programs compares to
the wilderness of Bard's Tale II (only that Drakken is better (IMHO)),
the interface of DM and Heroes of the Lance (Only you can have in
action your four character at the same time) and many more things that
you will see in the reviews. (That's why I think this will be the next
game of the year).

To the game developers:

Look this game!, I think that have the best of his perdecesors,
may be the best model could exist at this moment. (Graphics, sounds,
ect...)

                                           Angel //
                                               \X/

Disclaimer: I'm have nothing with Infogrames, I'm only a role play
gamer well satisfied.

************* Amiga, is not any computer, is THE COMPUTER ************

I've seen this game and I do like the graphics. But let me just
point out that it is NOT hard disk installable nor were most
of the other games the previous article mentioned. I may never
buy them for this reason alone.

I guess I'll make my comments here...

Maybe, if I can get around the problems I have with it. See below.

>BTW, to the interested;

Haven't played BTII...

>the interface of DM and Heroes of the Lance (Only you can have in

I strongly disagree here, mostly because of the following 2 problems,
one of which is an outright bug.

The bug:

Occasionally, when in the mode where all the characters are visible,
their mouse code gets screwed up and the pointer constantly rises (a al
CloseMe). Most annoying fighting this gremlin to regain control of the
mouse. You have to get into the other mode and back again (sometimes
more than once, just to get control again.

The problem:

I don't seem to be able to get my spellcasters to reliably throw healing
spells onto other characters, except when actually in combat. After
combat, right clicking on the receiving character casts the spell, but
it never hits. I've tried many positions for the characters. Is there
something I'm missing? It's nearly impossible to travel with a party for
any length of time if you can't heal them...

>you will see in the reviews. (That's why I think this will be the next
>game of the year).

Remember, Empire: The Commercial Kludge, was also a game of the year.
But then, so was Dungeon Master.

(ps, if you've got any hints on my problems, about the interface, etc,
NOT spoilers, please write. The game is quite pretty, and I'd like to
like it.)

I noticed this too. Usually hitting the down arrow on the keyboard
clears it up for me.

Position your ill characters above and slightly to the right of your
spell caster and cast the spell. Took me a while to figure this one
out.

The most annoying thing I find about the game is that you have no
sense of direction in the game. The story book is really good, but it
really doesn't tell you what to do or where to go. I found out most
of the stuff by a "cheat-sheet" I got off of PLINK. The only problem
is that according to the sheet, I am supposed to go to a castle in the
wasteland, but I can't get in the door, no matter what spells I cast.
Obviously, I haven't done something, but I haven't a clue. Anyone
have another "cheat sheet"?

I have almost finished Drakkhen and I like the scrolling, story, and
idea, but the implementation SUCKS. It has a lot of bugs, control of the
characters is poor, graphics, except for the scrolling effects, are mediocre.
I mean it is easy to loose control of the poorly animated chars and
walk into a door or moat. There are a lot of downright bugs as well, and
it does not recognize 2 drives and it does not multitask and it does
not recognize a hard disk. This thing is a kludge of a program and I
don't think I will buy any thing else from these guys, until they learn how to
write a computer program for the amiga. The story is great and there are no
other new fantasy Roleplaying games for the amiga, or few in any case, so if
you can stand the interface problems it is ok.
Here is the uuencoded zoo file for a partial walkthru and an IFF map
of the area, for those interested, just cut this stuff off the top,
and save the text below as drak.zoo.uu, then uudecode this stuff, then
you will get drakhlp.zoo, then unzoo that and you will have a walk thru and
maps.

This bug (which is actually caused during 'travel' mode) is very easy
to deal with. Just press the down arrow key once, and all is well.
Believe me, I know. I've spent too many hours already playing this
incredibly addictive game.

It is difficult to cast the 'heal minor' spell. It seems that there is
a fairly small area of each character that is 'correct' for the spell
to work. However, once you learn 'heal major' it no longer matters.

I currently have about 20-25 hours invested in this game (I spent
probably over 200 in the various travels in Dungeon Master), and I find
that the more I play it, the more I like it. Yes, it does have a few
'bugs', 'quirks', and other minor 'annoyances', but I am willing to
overlook these things, because the overall game is so engrossing.

It can be somewhat boring in the beginning (go fight the monster, die
restart, ad infinitum), but, once your characters start to succeed,
and gain some experience, it gets MUCH better. There is a certain
satisfaction in going up against a foe that so easily defeated you
before, nad watching your party handily dispatch them (and find thousands
of jade coins :-) ).

BTW, to those who say "I don't want it if I can't install it on my
hard disk" I say, you don't know what you're missing. I use my hard
disk for REAL work :-). Seriously, I would rather not have most
games on my hard disk, since space there is somewhat limited, and I
need the room for things like LARGE Turbo Silver tracings, DPaint
pics, Sound samples, ProWrite files, Postscript files, etc.

To get in the door in Drakkhen in the castle to the south, just
walk in the side of the door, left side, DO NOT walk thru the center.

You have to try things! ;-)

I have not seen this problem in my copy of the game....
so sorry, can't help you here....

One definate bug i did find is when you throw out a ring/sceptre of gain
stat that isnt wielded, it will lower that stat by two as if you had
thrown it away when it was wielded. be careful, wield all
rings/sceptres before throwing them out.(don't worry, you'll learn
quickly)

Gosh I asked the self same question to the net just a few weeks ago, so
don't feel bad.. this is the answer I got:

the heal spell will work on only one specific part of the person
you are trying to heal. As you go up levels, however, this part gets
larger, and therefore easier to find. when you hit major heal, it
doesn't matter where you click and it does a major heal on everybody.

I also think Drakkhen is the best thing since sliced bread! This bug
is something I noticed right away. But, it is easily stopped any time it
occurs by tapping the cursor arrows. (Mostly the arrow for the direction
opposite to the direction of drift). I've also had the antimagic spell
become permament. This is sorta nasty. But it is safe to save and then
restart your amiga. THE MAGIC IS BACK!! The only other thing I've noticed
is the typo for two of the magic spells. The drakkhen magic characters for
antimagic and resurrect are wrong. (They repeat previous commands isolate
and restore.) This is easily recognized once you figure out that the
magic commands are just a simple cipher. You can learn the entire drakkhen
alphabet.(except for w,x, and z which are not used in any commands) I can
actually READ and WRITE in Draakh!!!!

OK That catalogs all the bugs I have seen. Each problem has a fairly
simple work around. The only other complaint I've heard is that it is
hard to get started cause you die too easy. That is pretty much true in
all such games. Save often. Also, don't pass up the opportunity to get
healing elixer in the first castle (Hordtkhens' castle). This gets you
six doses of 8 points each per bottle. This stuff NEVER MISSES! Also
later you will get heal major which does not need to be aimed. It heals
everyone in the party by a certain number of points!

Hope this helps. This is an excellent game. It may take a while to get
used to it, but when you do, LOOKOUT!
