[comp.sys.amiga] The mac IIfx

91_bickingd@gar.union.edu (Bicking, David) (04/14/90)

I received the letter I am responding to in my mail. It looks like it
was posted to c.s.a. as well, so I am posting my response. This is no flame,
tho it is about IIfx vs Amiga :)

The distinction was not made, nor should it (IMHO) since both are
coprossessor systems, and both work "so that that screaming 680x0 chip isn't
slowed down by the more mundane tasks of computer housekeeping" as the add
proclaims. Yours does I/O, ours does graphics and sound.

Unfortunately, I haven't all the $$ values to quote from for exact info,
someone else could undoubtedly supply them. For a 2000 you pay $1,899. For a
GVP 68030, 33 Mhz, with 40MB quantum SCSI retails about $1,499. Last I heard
(quite a while ago) the 4M 32 bit 80ns "nibble mode DRAMs" using burst mode
runs for $2,000 (I suspect it's cheaper by now). That system, is approximately
comparable to the MAC IIfx (I know, I haven't forgotten the 24bit board, nor
the 32K static ram cache) and costs $5,398. Add the Multi-sync monitor for
about $600. The first 2 prices are retail (last I saw) while the rest are best
guess on my part.

There are products out there for the amiga that allow for 24-bit color,
though not on the Amiga screens, and I'm still hoping rumors of a C= board
arriving with the A3000 are valid (or better yet, a 32-bit board).

I don't have the technical know-how to say the following with impunity,
but someone on the net said it: The burst mode on the GVP card makes up for
the lack of a 32K static ram cache on the IIfx. Is this true? Why or why not?

	Ok. I mis-understood the article. Sorry :)

Just about everything, actually. Could you send me a description? You
know, the ones you send to dealers so they can sell them better. My address
is in my sig.

I've been seeing lots of Apple people here on C.S.A. What is this, an
invasion? :) Seriously, tho. I would like to know how I can receive a feed
from comp.sys.mac and comp.sys.atari.st What I get of C.S.A. I get through a
BITNET distribution from maine. We apparently don't get newsgroup feeds here
at all (rn and all that stuff is foreign to me), so if someone could tell me
how to receieve stuff from these digests (and send to them), please e-mail me,
since I don't think I get ALL the c.s.a. stuff either.
