[comp.sys.amiga] ZIP rams for 2630

a763@mindlink.UUCP (Scott Busse) (05/02/90)

Working for an Amiga Dealer, we came across 256x4 ZIP chips with a pin missing
many times, in fact my 2630 has them in it now. There should be absolutely no
problem with these, as the 2630 has an unused pin hole anyway.
*DON'T* solder the chips right into the 2630 unless you are sure the RAM chips
are all in good working order. If you get a bad chip, you could end up damaging
the board trying to pull it, and all the others you'll have to test, out of the
board. Find some ZIP sockets to solder in, you won't regret it! They're
somewhat hard to find sometimes, but they are available, and only cost $1-$2
each.

Howdy. Well, I just went out and purchased some ZIP rams. Now I have
run into a problem. The ZIPs that I got have a pin missing in every chip
I don't mean missing as in broken, it just seems as though they are different
somehow than the ones that are already on my 2630. Do you know whether or
not the NEC ZIPs on the 2630 have a dummy pin (or a ground), or do you know
what the deal is with my ZIPs? Also, would it be alright to solder ZIP
sockets? If so, where can I get good (hopefully cheap), ZIP sockets?

I saw a 3000 today. Was sorely tempted to steal it.
Honesty does have its downside 8-) I read a few of the things you were
discussing about it. There was much discussion on the 040. Does this mean
that we're going to have YAKA (Yet Another Killer Amiga) on the way? 8-)

			Thanks, Ralph Seguin

BTW, I requested our purchasing dept to try to locate some NEC
424256-10's for this old 2500/20. He finally found some at the 7th or
8th vendor who normally keeps them as a stock item. Several vendors
stated that in the last month or so there has been "a kind of a run on
these chips, but a bit strange since they are only being ordered 16 at
a time".
