[comp.sys.amiga] Some questions about hard drives

hensley@frith.msu.edu (John Hensley) (05/07/90)

I'm thinking of adding a hard drive to my 1 meg, 2 floppy 500, but
have heard that they can eat a lot of RAM. That would defeat the
purpose, since I want it to reduce disk-swapping and improve
multitasking.

So:

1) How much memory does one take? Are some makes better than others in
this respect? I'm especially interested in hearing from Pro Page
owners, as that's my major concern. Will I still be able to run it
   effectively with my existing RAM?

2) Of those featuring RAM expansion, do any allow it in small
increments? I really don't want to add more than I need to offset
   the hard drive's requirements.

(Now getting further away from the original question...:)

3) I've heard a lot of people knocking Seagate drives. I don't need
the speed or the price of a Quantum, and never heard anything bad
about the Seagates except here in c.s.a -- what's the reason?

4) Lastly, I'm looking for recommendations. I'm open to any
suggestions; all I want is something inexpensive, reliable, and
quiet that won't eat half my RAM. Speed and expandability aren't
that important, except that I'd like to be able to add a meg or two
   (much) later.

Please reply by E-mail; no one wants to wade through posts from all
the hard drive owners out there :)! If there is desire for a summary,
I'll e-mail it, or post if enough people ask.

Thanks,
John
